What does UTV have in store for 2012?

UTV has a rather limited slate lined up for 2012, comprising only six films. But clearly, the company believes in quality over quantity. But are the films really going to work? Let’s take a look

First up is Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, due a February 10 release, a co-production with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The synopsis goes thus: EMAET is a lighthearted, tragicomedy about a guy in his mid twenties, going through a breakdown in his personal as well as work life. Rahul Kapoor (Imran Khan), 26, loses his job as an architect in Vegas and by a twist of fate he meets Riana Braganza (Kareena Kapoor), a quick-witted hairstylist, who is everything he isn’t. Will this friendship turn to love? The film has a great title that has an instant nostalgia name recall value besides a killer cast and music by the brilliant Amit Trivedi. Since it’s also releasing in the Valentine’s Day frame, it’s likely to be a winner. Click here to read more

Anurag Kashyap’s first family entertainer stars Kunal Kapoor

The That Girl In Yellow Boots filmmaker is all set to woo family audiences with a comedy caper. Will he finally get the uncles and aunties to say nice things about his films?

All those parents and grandparents who cringe while watching grotesque scenes from Anurag Kashyap’s dark and edgy films – like No Smoking, Dev D, That Girl In Yellow Boots, etc – could soon have a reason to flash their 400-watt smiles. The filmmaker has announced his first family entertainer – a comedy caper about a quirky Punjabi family. Wonder if this one is the outcome of all the harsh criticism Anurag has got from film audiences of the rather elderly kind who want to see more candyfloss and less debauchery… Click here to read more

Anurag Kashyap and UTV team up again, for ‘Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana’

After making critically acclaimed and commercially successful cimematic pieces like Dev.DAamir and Udaan, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has again teamed up with UTV Spotboy for a comedy. Titled Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, the film went on floors in Punjab last week with debutant Sameer Sharma helming the project. “Together we (UTV, Anurag and composer Amit Trivedi) have done some really good stuff starting with Aamir and then Dev.D and Udaan. And we hope to repeat the same with Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. It’s everything that the title says. And the Shuv between the Luv and the chicken is what is more fun,” Kashyap said in a statement. Kashyap has roped in Trivedi for the music. As the title suggests, the film has Punjabi flavour – it revolves around a Punjabi joint family and a secret recipe of a dish called Chicken Khurana. The film promises to entertain audiences with inherent humour, drama, emotion and confusion on the screen. “Anurag shared the script with us and we instantly fell in love with the characters and the world that the writer Sumit Batheja has created. Very few stories can make you laugh out loud one moment and bring a lump in your throat the next – ‘Luv Shuv’ maintains that delicate balance of humour and emotion throughout,” said Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures. While Kunal Kapoor plays the male lead, newcomer Huma Qureshi has been roped in to play the female protagonist. She would also be seen in Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur.
