Will Madhuri Dixit get a thumbs-up or thumbs-down in ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5′?

Mrs Madhuri Dixit Nene has always been known for her sweet disposition. But when it comes to style, the lady is capable of committing some serious faux pas

While Madhuri’s sartorial choices were restricted to ethnic Sabyasachi designs in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4, we wonder who will get the golden opportunity to design the diva’s clothes, this season. Although we are quite sure that the graceful babe will continue sticking to full sleeved Anarkalis and jazzy saris this year too, but after seeing the recent promos of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, we kinda changed our minds. Madhuri resorting to some serious and flawless experimentation didn’t seem like a distant possibility, after we saw her get all inspired by Meena Kumari and flaunt an aesthetic style in the new trailer of JDJ 5. Can Katrina Kaif dance?

Katrina Kaif might be a filmmaker’s delight for the kind of item numbers she dishes out. But dance maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj is not happy with her moves

Item numbers sell like hot cakes and item girls of B-town are in tremendous demand. An item number today can safely be credited for pulling a part of the viewers to the theatres. But not everyone is impressed with this trend. Especially, Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj, who has previously choreographed Madhuri Dixit in Dil To Pagal Hai and Devdas and Kamal Haasan in Vishwaroopam. The veteran is quite unhappy with the way dancing in Bollywood is shaping up. What’s more, he doesn’t even consider those hip-shaking numbers to be dance. According to him, heroines today aren’t aware of what real dancing is. “Today’s heroines have no personality and can’t carry a dance on their own shoulders. They are nowhere in the same league as Waheeda Rehman or Meena Kumari and think whatever they do is the right thing,” Birju Maharaj complained. Click here to read more

LOOT Movie Review: Downhill all the way

Govinda’s film is a painful reminder of the collapse of the comic caper in Bollywood, but it’s still better than Rascals

There is a don (oh, there are many of them peeping out of every nook and cranny of this abominable comedy) played by Prem Chopra who loves Meena Kumari and Pakeezah. Sighing loudly he tells another don, played with lipsmacking relish by Mahesh Manjrekar, ‘They don’t make heroines like Meena Kumari any more. She was someone you wanted to marry. Nowadays the heroines are good for only one thing’. That is just about the most subtle dialogue you will get to hear in this in-your-face farce where three small-time wastrels – Govinda, Jaffrey and Mahaakshay, and a scowling goon Suniel Shetty – take off to Pattaya. What follows is a fiesta of fatuous gags and dialogues including of course, bad puns on ‘pattaya’ and ‘guard’. Wouldn’t miss out on that. Loot looks like an unfinished product from a group of actors and technicians who lost their way in transit. This one should have ideally remained in the cans. Just why Suniel invested into this piece of filmed garbage is anyone’s guess. Click here to read more

BOL Review: The film is flawed but worthy

It highlights issues that are germane not just in Pakistan, but in many countries around the world

Pakistani director Shoaib Mansoor made a stunning feature film debut in 2007 with the critical, commercial and musical success Khuda Ke Liye that also featured a standout cameo by our own Naseeruddin Shah. While that film tackled the sensitive subject of religious extremism, Bol, his sophomore effort, looks at female emancipation in Pakistan Click here to read more
