Ekk Deewana Tha: Sometimes, the world recognises a stinker

Cineswami analyses the failure of Gautham Menon’ Bollywood remake of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya

We are, of course, referring to Gautham Menon’s much-ballyhooed Ekk Deewana Tha, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya and Ye Maya Chesave, the Tamil and Telugu originals respectively, were successful at the box office. The Tamil version in particular was refreshing to watch for the strong lead performances of Simbu (or Young Superstar as he likes to call himself) and Trisha Krishnan. And Ganesh as Simbu’s cinematographer friend was an absolute delight, delivering his droll one-liners with a straight face. Alas, as we know now, the Hindi version stinks. Click here to read more

Pratiek plays the blame game

Prateik recently said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was responsible for the failure of his last film My Friend Pinto. Why is the Ek Deewana Tha actor digging up old issues?

We are not sure if it’s a genuine statement or a publicity stunt for his recently released film Ek Deewana Tha, but Prateik has raked up some old issues, which might come back to bite him. Prateik: I take time to open up

The Ekk Deewana Tha actor says he makes an effort to give his best in front of the camera although he is still coming to terms with it

A man of few words, Prateik is a natural actor thanks to his legacy, but the 25-year-old says acting is such a vast subject that he can’t learn every nuance even if he gets to spend decades in front of the camera. “I am enjoying it. Yes, I am comfortable. As I said, I take time to open up and I am coming to terms with it,” said Prateik, the son of Raj Babbar and the late Smita Patil, both Bollywood actors. With each day, Prateik learns something new, but he feels it’s impossible to absorb the vastness of the subject. “I don’t think I will understand each and every thing even if I reach (Amitabh) Bachchan’s age. There are so many things to learn.” Click here to read more

Kalki Koechlin: ‘Dabangg’ is one of my fave films

Yogen Shah

The actor-writer says entertainment and morals cannot be mixed in a film

Known for her unconventional choice of scripts, Kalki Koechlin says it’s time Bollywood filmmakers sat back and got the idea of commercial cinema right. The actor, who also supports bold portrayal of women on the big screen, says filmmakers should avoid mixing entertainment with a moral story. “I find that a lot of times what’s wrong with commercial cinema is not the subject, but how when people are making an action film they end up putting gyaan in it. It’s not going to work,” Kalki, 28, said in an interview. Click here to read more

Is Prateik star material?

Yogen Shah

As the actor gears up for the release of his new film Ekk Deewana Tha, we wonder if the lad has what it takes to enter B-town’s coveted superstar league

Prateik’s journey in B-town started off with a supporting role as Genelia D’Souza’s brother in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. Since then the actor has been inundated with character roles rather than meaty main lead offers. But the point to ponder is – why don’t filmmakers and industry insiders who go raving about the actor’s acting skills and persona bother to cast him in something more substantial? ‘Agneepath’ music composers Ajay-Atul on ‘Chikni Chameli’

Zee TV

It is like a dream come true to recreate the Agneepath aura, say Ajay-Atul

Action films are usually about muscle power and stunts, but Karan Johar’s remake of Bollywood classic Agneepath provided many sequences for songs, according to National Award-winning composer duo Ajay-Atul. “Normally in action films, you don’t get many situations where you can add songs. If you see action films, where’s the scope for music? Even the original Agneepath had three or four songs,” Atul Gogavale said on behalf of the duo. “Our album has six songs, and we have tried to maintain a good variety with one intense Ganpati song, one qawwali, one romantic number, another song capturing the emotions of a brother and sister… We wanted to give this album our best because it is very special for us,” he added.
