Oscar Awards 2012 winners: Bollywood tweets

The Artist

Bollywood wrote about the 84th Academy Awards winners on social networking site Twitter

Looks like most people in Bollywood were asleep during the live telecast of the 84th Academy Awards. Some enthusiastic ones were wide awake though, and tweeted as the award ceremony was being aired. Amitabh Bachchan did not tweet but wrote about the winning film The Artist on his blog before the Oscars. He said, “I watched a lovely film ‘The Artist’ via the UFO set up in the house and it was a delight to see a black and white, silent movie in February of 2012!! In an age when color and music and speech and sound play such an important role in cinema today, it was most innovative on the part of the makers to present something like this. I believe it is up for the Oscars, which are out tomorrow on Sunday.” The others who tweeted included Neil Nitin Mukesh, Celina Jaitly, Shreya Ghoshal and Rajat Kapoor. Some film journalists were also tweeting incessantly. Amongst all the buzz, we liked what a music channel tweeted. Take a look at Click here to read more

Nine films will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 84th Academy Awards or Oscars to you and I. Sixty-three films had originally qualified in the category, including India’s entry Adaminte Makan Abu, the Malayalam film directed by Salim Ahmed. Sadly, not having the nous of an Aamir Khan, Ahmed was unable to parlay the selection into a place in the shortlist, let alone a nomination in the final five. Thus, Lagaan, Salaam Bombay and Mother India remain the only Indian films to receive Oscar nominations. Click here to read more

Aamir Khan’s ‘Lagaan’ in Time magazine’s All-time 25 Best Sports Movies

Cricket-based Bollywood film Lagaan in which people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers, has been included in a list of the 25 best sports movies by Time. The magazine said it was the “longest and the most enthralling underdog sports movie ever”. The Aamir Khan-starrer, which was nominated for the Oscars, was a huge success not only amongst movie lovers but also cricket fanatics. “Even those who know none of cricket’s complicated rules will bounce in their seats to AR Rahman’s irrepressible tunes; here, one can immediately and fully accept the Bollywood trope of music and dance as an expression of life’s deepest, most soaring emotions”, the magazine said.
