The first film made by an Indian was Raja Harishchandra, which was shown to the public on May 3, 1913. As we enter the 100th year of India cinema, we take a look at the silent era (from 1913 to 1930) of the movies and present to you our top 10 films from this period

Ketan Mehta’s ‘Rang Rasiya’ to release in November 2011

Ketan Mehta’s film on painter Raja Ravi Varma, titled Rang Rasiya – Colours of Passion, will hit Indian cinema screens in November 2011, the director revealed. The film has finally found a distributor and the producers are working on the dates. Starring Randeep Hooda as Raja Ravi Varma and Nandana Sen as his muse Sugandhabai, the film has been ready for release since 2008 but did not find any takers. However, it was showed at many film festivals in the meantime. Rang Rasiya apparently faced problems due to some sensuous scenes between the lead pair.

Santosh Sivan is one of the few cinematographers in Indian cinema who have worked across borders and gained recognition on home soil as well as abroad. Not many know that the master craftsman began his journey as a painter, then moved on to still photography, from there to cinematography, then direction, and finally acted in a Malayalam film in which he played Raja Ravi Varma – the very painter who inspired him in the first place! Surreal. Sivan has won not one, not two, but 13 National Film Awards for various categories through his career. Unbelievable, but true. We talk to the maestro about his journey. Imran Khan goes international!

His next release, Delhi Belly, will have its world premiere in London at the Indian Film Festival that starts at the end of the month

From Satyajit Ray to Abhinav Deo, the world is indeed a stage for Indian cinema. On June 30, the London Indian Film Festival will open at Cineworld, Haymarket, with the Delhi Belly, starring Imran Khan, a film now (in)famous for its controversial song, Bhaag DK Bose. The film releases worldwide the next day, so we look forward to seeing Imran and wife Avantika on the red carpet looking, as always, a glam cutsie pie couple, with maamu Aamir Khan and his jaan Kiran Rao in fond attendance.
