Mallika Sherawat’s item song ‘Laila’ fails to sizzle

After making the nation groove on her Jalebi bai tune a year back, Mallika Sherawat has returned with her latest item song Laila for the film Tezz. But this time around the Hisss babe doesn’t quite get it right

The trend started with Malaika Arora Khan’s Chaiyya chaiyya in Dil Se (1998) and Shilpa Shetty’s Main aayi UP Bihar lootne in Shool (1999), fired up by Yana Gupta’s Babuji zara dheere chalo from Dum (2003). But it took a while for the trend of item numbers to really catch on with big stars. The success of Malaika’s Munni badnaam hui and Katrina Kaif’s Sheila ki jawani made it almost mandatory to have an item song in every film, and with a top heroine. In 2011, Mallika Sherawat’s Jalebi bai from Double Dhamaal grabbed the audience’s attention and Kat as Chikni Chameli in Agneepath set the screen on fire early 2012. But we know that every trend hits a plateau and then the decline starts before a fresh fad, a better trend comes along. Mallika’s Laila in Tezz in all probability is likely to mark the end of the trend that has had the nation grooving. Click here to read more

Mallika Sherawat turns item gal again for ‘Tezz’!

The actor was last seen gyrating to the tunes of an item song in Double Dhamaal. After almost a year, Mallika is all set to groove again, this time for Priyadarshan’s Tezz

Rumours suggest that Mallika Sherawat gave her nod to the popular remake of the song Laila Ho Laila from Qurbani without thinking twice ‘coz of her close association with producer Ratan Jain. We really wonder why Ms Sherawat didn’t bother to think twice before taking this one up. Click here to read more

Is Mallika Sherawat still B-town’s item queen?

Looking at the fate of Mallika Sherawat’s recent items songs like Razia and Shalu ke thumke, it doesn’t seem as if her dance numbers are still selling like hotcakes. Yet the sexy siren signs on to do one more for Priyadarshan’s Tezz

The item song is Bollywood’s favourite tool to lure audiences in to cinema halls, but now it’s becoming boring and redundant, almost as bad as scripted reality shows on TV. Even then filmmakers don’t give up hope and continue churning out song after song. So we have Malaika Arora Khan doing ‘Anarkali disco chali’ in Sajid Khan’s Housefull 2 and her contemporary and favourite item gal Mallika Sherawat gyrating to ‘Laila Laila’ in Priyadarshan’s action thriller Tezz - the number that so many stars, from Priyanka Chopra to Sameera Reddy, were rumoured to be doing. The ‘Ek do teen gal’ will soon be back to stay!

She is coming home – Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Bollywood’s dancing queen with the million dollar smile, who gave it all up for her Ram, is relocating to Mumbai. We take a look at what made her everyone’s favourite star

Though she made her debut in Abodh as Gauri in 1984, Madhuri Dixit took Bollywood by a storm with her Mohini act in Tezaab only a few years later. The ‘Ek do teen’ song became part of filmi folklore, long before Munni, Sheela or Razia were even thought of. It was not just her killer moves, but her endearing smile that ensured that she captured hearts; and she kept them all this while, despite the fact that she married her prince charming and chose to live an ordinary life in the United States. No reason to say ‘Thank You’!

There is no point dissing a Bazmee film, it’s far too easy. The only positive here is the wonderful Irrfan Khan, who has the best lines

Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive, goes the popular, oft-recorded song. It is a well-known fact that Anees Bazmee makes films that are an assault on the intelligence, so what if some of them have been big hits, like say, Singh Is Kinng. That film at least was coherent, but that’s because it was shamelessly heisted from Jackie Chan’s Miracles, itself a (legal) remake of Frank Capra’s Pocketful of Miracles. Click here to read more
