Madhur Bhandarkar: Off to ask God for a heroine?

Maybe divine intervention is the only route that the director can take right now. Everyone seems to be letting him down where Heroine is concerned!

Poor Madhur Bhandarkar. The director of such fabulous films as Chandni Bar and Page 3 has been having a dreadful time of it where his ambitious project Heroine is concerned. First it was Kareena Kapoor, who kept him waiting for months – years? – and then decided that she could not possibly do the scenes showing intimacy et al. Then the so-beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan stepped in and much was made of the whole shebang, including a high-profile announcement at the Cannes film festival in June this year. But the suspiciously amply-curved ARB was, as many suspected, on the verge of making an announcement about her ‘interesting condition’ and was, and in a flurry of bad vibes, conflicting reports, told-you-sos and congratulations, parted ways from the whole thing. The first look of Madhur Bhandarkar’s ambitious National Award contender film Heroine was launched amidst huge fanfare at Cannes Film Festival.  Ash’s co-star in the film Arjun Rampal, having tasted the National Award blood with Rock On, was all the more excited being a part of Bhandarkar’s magnum opus. Then one day the bubble burst as rumours of Aishwarya’s pregnancy started doing the rounds. Bollywood is always looking for a reason to celebrate, and Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao had a great excuse recently. Delhi Belly has not yet released, but the team found a reason to cheer: the success of the controversial song DK Bose. Two sets of people have got hooked on to it – one that loves the double entendre lyrics and another that is getting all moralistic about it.
