Life and work of Gautam Rajadhyaksha

The man behind the brilliant composition of many pictures, Gautam Rajadhyaksha passed away this morning. He started his career with the photo services department of Lintas India Ltd. He continued his passion for photography as and when time permitted. In the early 1980, Gautam got his big break in showbiz when he took portfolio shots of Shabana Azmi (classmate), Tina Munim and Jackie Shroff. Post 1987, Gautam took up commercial photography as a full-time profession. He was termed as a fashion photographer after his cousin, noted model and writer Shobhaa De invited him to capture celebrity portraits for her magazine, Celebrity. He simultaneously took photographs for other popular magazines like Stardust, Cine Blitz and Filmfare. Gautam is said to be the one who discovered Tina Munim, Salman Khan and model Sheetal Mallar. In 1997, Gautam released a coffee table book with portraits of about 45 popular celebrities from Durga Khote to Aishwarya Rai and called the book Faces. He received critical acclaim for his work in the field of Indian photography. Besides being a photographer, Gautam also ventured into writing screenplay for films. His first screenplay for the film Bekhudi was the launch pad for Kajol and his second film was the critically acclaimed Anjaam starring Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan.

Rauf Ahmed, former editor of magazines like FilmfareZee Premiere, Screen, etc, was one of the photographer’s closest associates and among the first to recognise his talent. Rauf says, “When I took over as the editor of Filmfare in 1986, it was a very old-fashioned magazine and I revived it. Gautam had a very important role in this.
