Satyadev Dubey (1936-2011): Tribute to a legend

IANS

He was controversial, candid and had a healthy disregard for anything colonial in theatre. The death of Satyadev Dubey has sadly brought the curtains down on an era of fierce Indianness on stage

Mumbai-based director, actor, playwright, screen writer and filmmaker Satyadev Dubey was best known for his play Andha Yug – a comment on the futility of war – by Dharamvir Bharti, which he staged in 1962. It is said that Dubey, who was born in Bilaspur in present day Chhattisgarh in 1936, had moved to Mumbai to become a cricketer. But he ended up in theatre. Director Bhanu Bharti, who produced Andha Yug, told IANS: “He was a remarkable man because he had carved a space for himself on the Marathi stage despite not being a Maharashtrian. He singlehandedly started a new theatre movement.” Critics say that Dubey courted controversy with his criticism of English theatre in India in the 1960s and ’70s, saying it was a colonial legacy and only the elite took part in it. However, he later switched to English theatre himself when he felt that the medium had freed itself from the baggage of British and American influence and English had developed and Indian idiom on stage. Gautam Rajadhyaksha was a skillful writer as well: Sanjay Surkar, Marathi film director

Gautam Rajadhyaksha was an all-rounder, best known for his photography. But he was a good writer as well – his story for a Marathi movie, Sakhi, directed by Marathi director Sanjay Surkar, is still greatly appreciated. Sanjay says, “Gautam was a very close friend; we knew each other right from the beginning of my career. He was the best photographer, but he also had the skill to write stories for dramas and movies. His innocence was simply amazing. And that has reflected in his story of Sakhi. There was softness in his personality. When we went to his house, we always felt like we were in some other universe. His entire home is full of his photographs. Gautam had a positive energy in him, and he was always hoping for one more film to write.”
Actor Sonali Kulkarni played the lead role in Sakhi. She remembered how Gautam gave her a lot of confidence and self respect from the start of their friendship. “I knew Gautam since my first photoshoot in 1998. Apart from being the best photographer, he was very fond of Indian classical music and Marathi literature. He loved each and every art form. With Sakhi, he never forced his ‘writer’ attitude on us while on the sets of the movie. His passing away is a huge loss to the Marathi and Hindi film industries.”Click here to read more

SINGHAM REVIEW: When Ajay Devgn channelled Rajinikanth

It’s got the right dose of every emotion essential for entertainment, but it’s chock-full of clichés and fast becoming a diet that palls

Rohit Shetty’s Singham is about an honest, diligent and righteous cop, Bajirao Singham, a Maratha, played by the robust looking Ajay Devgn (sorry Salman, right now the Devgn dude boasts of a better body!). He has a happy existence in a small town called Shivgad, located between the borders of Karnataka and Goa. Singham resolves the local people’s fights and differences over a cup of chai and conversation. He is the fave man of every Shivgad resident. Click here to read more
