As the nation ushers in the new year, Nana Patekar will bring in his birthday. The veteran actor and filmmaker turns 61 years old today. Nana started his Bollywood career with impressive performances in films such as Gaman, Ankush, Pratighaat and Salaam Bombay, but it was with Parinda that he was noticed by the mainstream Bollywood filmgoers. Film writer KK Singh passes away

Famous script and dialogue writer KK Singh passed away in his sleep at his residence in Mumbai on Sunday. He was 58. Singh started his career with Raj Kapoor’s Prem Rog and worked with many other skilful directors later in his career, such as Raj Khosla, Mehul Kumar, Rajiv Rai and Mahesh Manjrekar among others. He wrote for 24 films including the popular ones like Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Krantiveer, Tridev, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Pitaah, Jaanwar, Kurukshetra, Tirangaa, Talaash, Barsaat and Ek Rishtaa – The Bond of Love. His last film was Jaago. He even wrote dialogues for a Bhojpuri film named Aulad, for which he was paid Rs 11 lakh, the highest amount paid to a writer in the industry. Singh had also directed the Salman Khan film Veergati. May his soul rest in peace.

The average Indian will have enormous respect for the national flag. No tricolour on underwear or blankets for them. The Indian flag is an object of great nationalistic pride for its countrymen. And Bollywood adds its filmi bit to that, even becoming jingoistic in its praise of the motherland and its symbols.  Remember the many times that NRIs get teary-eyed at a mere glimpse of the tricolour in Karan Johar films.
