Since the IIFA Awards 2013 will not be held in Vancouver, the Canadian government will now host the Times of India Film Awards, informs Cineswami

The International Indian Film Academy Awards or the IIFAs are representative of Bollywood – big, bright, colourful, and like the awards handed out every year, ultimately irrelevant. Who won the IIFAs last year? Don’t remember? Not to worry, nobody does, unlike say, the Filmfare Awards. Click here to read more

‘Rockstar’ director Imtiaz Ali has a new ‘Girlfriend’

Cineswami takes a look at the happenings in Bollywood this week

Rockstar has just hit cinemas, but director Imtiaz Ali is not one to rest on his laurels. He’s already into his next venture; a remake of 2009’s Korean hit My Girlfriend Is An Agent, where Ali will don the hat of creative producer. And no, the film won’t be a rip-off as Bollywood normally does. UTV Motion Pictures have officially acquired the remake rights and are on board as co-producers. This will be the first film for Ali’s wife Preety’s newly formed company PI Films. Choreographer Bosco, that is 50 percent of the Bosco-Caesar choreographer duo, will make his directorial debut. The film was a runaway hit in Korea and tells the story of two spies, once in love but now bitter rivals, on a mission to stop a Russian crime group from stealing an advanced chemical weapon. Wonder how that plotline will be transposed to an Indian context, but the talented Imtiaz is bound to find a way. Click here to read more

But if the early reviews of her latest film, the Michael Winterbottom-directed Trishna are anything to go by, the gal can indeed act. One reviewer says that she brings a “fragile dignity” to her role, while others say that Ms P looks gorgeous Click here to read more

Veteran Hema Malini getting complacent after years of success is justifiable, but what does daughter Esha Deol have on her filmi plate that she can boast about? Apart from decent dancing skills and the ‘Deol’ label, this chick has little to show off…

The celestial status of our stars

The OPEN Magazine

At the IIFA awards in Toronto, I saw again how crazy we are about our film stars. Is it this madness that keeps Bollywood from being flattened by Hollywood? Perhaps

I’ve always known that Indians suffer from a particularly virulent case of movie madness, but just how sick we are was made apparent last month when I went to the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards in Toronto. The 12th edition of the IIFA marked its North American premiere. Clearly, neither the organisers nor the Royal Fairmont Hotel, where the Bollywood contingent was staying, had anticipated the unabashed love that local South Asians have for Hindi movies. Everyone veered between total hysteria and shell shock. Click here to read more
