’7aam Arivu’ beats ‘Velayudham’ at the box office!
7aam Arivu earned about Rs 37 crore, while Velayudham managed to collect Rs 31 crore in the first week
Tamil cinemas were on a roll this Diwali with tough competition between Suriya and Vijay’s films 7aam Arivu and Velayudham respectively. RA.One collected Rs 26.5 crore across the world on its opening day (including Rs 18.5 crore in India), beating Bodyguard’s mighty Rs 21 crore
The opening salvos have been fired and it’s round one to SRK. The numbers for Shahrukh Khan’s magnum opus RA.One are out and they tell a very interesting tale. Opinions may differ, but numbers don’t lie and the hard fact is that RA.One collected Rs 26.5 crore across the world on its opening day (including Rs 18.5 crore in India), beating Bodyguard’s mighty Rs 21 crore. SRK supporters may argue that the opening day, Wednesday, coincided with the Diwali puja performed by millions of people thus reducing footfall and people would turn out in larger numbers subsequently. That turned out to be the case and on Thursday the audience turned out en masse. On day two, RA.One netted a humongous Rs 25.1 crore in India alone, making it the highest ever collection on a single day for an Indian film. True to form, Vijay Ilayadalapathy provides his fans with a dish that has all the ingredients of the typical Kollywood potboiler. Directed by Jayam Raja, the movie includes all the ingredients that one associates with any of Vijay’s movies. It has action, comedy, some good music and dances thrown in together with dollops of sentiments. Once upon a time there was a successful Tamil hero called Vijay, also known as Ilaya Thalapathi (or Junior Rajinikanth for the uninitiated). His recent films didn’t exactly set the Koovam on fire. Once upon a time, and right now actually, there is and was a wildly successful historical science fiction action adventure game called Assassin’s Creed, popular the world over. Team Vijay ran out of ideas for his latest vanity project Velayudham about a milkman turned vigilante. As the milkman, Vijay is in his element, playing to the galleries as per normal, but for the vigilante, Team Vijay decided to lift the look, feel and even scenes whole from the game. The Internet is full of comparisons between the two, making the inspiration obvious to the meanest intellect. Vijay’s vigilante Velayudham is clearly based on Ezio from Assassin’s Creed.
