Amitabh Bachchan awarded with Phalke Ratna at Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards ceremony
The who’s who of B-town were awarded for their contribution to the Bollywood industry
The 143rd Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards ceremony (not to be confused with Government of India’s ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’) was held yesterday, May 3, 2012 at Juhu’s Tulip Star Hotel. Click here to read moreBOOK REVIEW: ‘Bollywood’s Top 20 Superstars Of Indian Cinema’ – Not a compelling read
Bhaichand Patel’s compilation of essays about the best of B-town will definitely irk Salman Khan’s fans endlessly (he is not included in the book) and doesn’t have great insights about the icons, most of whom we have already heard and read so much about, on a daily basis
The kitschy jacket of the book titled ‘Bollywood’s Top 20 Superstars of Indian Cinema’ feels incomplete because much to your disbilief, you can’t spot superstar Salman Khan on it. As a reader you want to know the reason for Salman’s absence on the cover and in the pages that follow. There is an explanation provided in the book’s introduction for excluding him which sounds elitist and many would want to stop reading the book at that point. Cineswami has a new passion – the lovely Mamata-di of Poschim Bongo, and he says there should be a film on the politician
You might be wondering, gentle reader, as to why the spectre of politics is disgracing these pages meant to carry graceful accounts of the altogether more noble, if not clean, entertainment industry. Not to worry, Cineswami will provide a connection, however specious it may be. Straight off the bat, if the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra, Govinda and Jaya Prada can have political links, certainly Cineswami can. That’s not even looking at highly politicised Tamil Nadu, where every single chief minister since 1967 has either been an actor, actress or screenwriter. And Andhra Pradesh was ruled by the late, great NTR. But, we digress. We must return to the object of Cineswami’s passion, the lovely Mamata-di. The graceful lady swept away more than three decades of communist rule in West Bengal and proved the power of democracy by winning with a brute majority. Abbas-Mustan’s mega action-thriller Players, unlike their previous outing Race, doesn’t have many twists and turns initially but once they start spilling there’s no stopping them, turning an already boring film into a laughable and cringe-worthy affair. Read review…
Neil Nitin Mukesh’s character, Spidey, raises a toast and roars “may the best player win!” Sitting in the theatre waiting for the film to get over, you secretly mumble, may all the players be shot dead and let’s get it done with! Your mumbling doesn’t stop there. You secretly hope that none of the entities who have been bumped off so far get resurrected from their deathbed to stretch an already burdensome plot to the tipping point of boredom. But, alas, nobody’s really listening to you. Cars keep on somersaulting and the plot and sub-plot get all clogged up. Snazzy gadgets and shiny people get rolled out in some of the best locales in the world, but nothing seems to hold your interest. Even the best of camera work (Possibly, the only credit-worthy thing about Players) and the stunning-looking Bipasha and Sonam start getting on your nerves after a point. Movie review: Tell Me O Kkhuda
Nothing really to tell here!
Hema Malini is still called ‘Dream Girl’, but it ain’t a tag her daughter Esha – however great her shape may be – can inherit easily. The fond mum insists her daughter can act; audiences have not yet seen much evidence of that, though there was a hint in the rather offbeat Just Married and perhaps some promise in her debut, Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe. Esha is a far better classical dancer than an actor, but it is perhaps her lineage that will not allow her to give up trying to make it on the big screen.
