Madhur Bhandarkar to face trial in rape case
The Bombay High Court Thursday rejected the application of filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar to stay the process against him in a Mumbai metropolitan court in the Preeti Jain rape case. “Justice RC Chavan today (Thursday) refused to stay the trial against Bhandarkar, stating that he will now have to face criminal trial,” Jain’s lawyer S Kunjuraman said. “Bhandarkar has tried his level best to buy time by approaching various courts and filing several pleas. But now he has exhausted all his tricks and will have to face trial,” he added.
In July 2004, Jain had lodged a complaint alleging that Bhandarkar had raped her several times between 1999 and 2004 under the pretext of marrying her and casting her as actor in his movies. A Mumbai metropolitan court had, in September last year, found substance in Jain’s complaint, and issued process against Bhandarkar, directing him to face the trial. Shootout at Wadala: Sanjay Gupta denied anticipatory bail
A Mumbai sessions court Monday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of filmmaker Sanjay Gupta who was booked for sending out invites for his movie’s event on a letterhead resembling that of the city police chief, police said. “Gupta’s anticipatory bail plea has been rejected by the sessions court today (Monday). We had opposed the plea as his explanation for the same was not satisfactory,” said Senior Police Inspector Nandkumar Mehtar of northwest Mumbai’s Versova Police Station where a first information report (FIR) against Gupta was registered. Police questioned Gupta for nearly two hours Sunday. “Gupta did not cooperate with us during the investigation. He kept misleading us,” Mehtar said.
Gupta last month sent out invites for the promotion of his upcoming film Shootout at Wadala on a letterhead that resembled that of Mumbai’s police commissioner. An FIR was registered against Gupta February 29 and he was booked under several non-bailable sections. Police had issued summons to Gupta, asking him to present himself to explain his case or face arrest Friday. Gupta approached the court Saturday for anticipatory bail.Click here to read more
Madhur Bhandarkar granted anticipatory bail in rape case
A Mumbai magistrate court Monday granted anticipatory bail to Bollywood filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar in the 2004 case of rape and criminal intimidation filed by actor Preeti Jain. He was provided bail on a surety of Rs 30,000. Magistrate BB Pantawene also asked Bhandarkar to deposit his passport with the court and not to leave the country. The magistrate also warned him against influencing witnesses in the case. The court asked him to furnish the bond after Bhandarkar produced a copy of anticipatory bail obtained by him seven years ago. Bhandarkar has, however, challenged the magistrate court’s Sep 19 order to initiate proceedings against him. The case is likely to be transferred to the sessions court for trial November 29. In July 2004, Jain had lodged a complaint alleging that Bhandarkar had raped her several times between 1999 and 2004 under the pretext of marrying her and casting her as actress in his movies.
