The Bhatts have said this one is not a sequel to Aashiqui, but a retelling of a love story. But does it work, even with the title adding value?
When we first heard about Aashiqui 2 we, like almost everyone else, thought it would be a sequel to the first, which made Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal instant stars. That neither of them managed to follow up on that success is a different story, but the film told a tale that could possibly be continued into the future, perhaps into a new generation. Mani Kaul: RIP
It is with profound sadness that Cineswami notes the passing of Rabindranath aka ‘Mani’ Kaul, a true auteur of Indian cinema. Bollywood fans may not have heard of him at all, save the tenuous connection with Shahrukh Khan
In 1991, Kaul made a television mini-series Ahmak (Idiot) based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s masterwork and Khan had a key role in it. This was, of course, long before Khan attained superstardom. In 1975, Kaul made the masterly Duvidha that was remade in 2005 by Khan’s Red Chillies production house as Paheli, starring Khan himself in a double role alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. Paheli was ostensibly directed by Amol Palekar but in reality it was ghost directed by Khan. Click here to read more

Madhur Bhandarkar not remaking ‘Aashiqui’
Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has clarified he is not working on a remake of 1990 hit romantic film Aashiqui, and says work on the sequel to Fashion might get underway 2012. Meanwhile, work on his most ambitious project, Heroine, starts November-end. “Let me clarify, I am not making Aashiqui remake. Fashion 2 is under consideration for 2012 end but nothing has been finalised yet!” Bhandarkar posted on micro-blogging site Twitter. “Heroine principal photography to commence from end Nov!” he added. There has been a spate of speculation over Bhandarkar’s upcoming projects. In September, it was reported that Bhandarkar had been asked by T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar to remake the superhit that starred Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal. The other buzz was about Bhandarkar’s Fashion 2, for which he is rumoured to have approached Madhuri Dixit, who is back from the US to Mumbai for good. But for now, the filmmaker is looking forward to working with Kareena Kapoor on Heroine. The project was supposed to star Aishwarya Rai, but she was replaced after she announced her pregnancy after shooting for a few days.
