The miracle of ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ at the box office
The box office collections jumped to Rs 4.5 crore on the opening weekend thanks to word of mouth
It was a film that its producers UTV had no faith in. Even though Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar, starring India’s best actor Irrfan, had won plaudits internationally, including sold out screenings at the London Film Festival, UTV dragged their feet on the film’s release. They kept postponing it until perhaps swayed by the critical, if not commercial, reception accorded to Dhulia’s Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, they decided to take the plunge and release the film. The release was at best a low-key affair. Almost nothing was spent on marketing and publicity and the film went out on a scant 300 screens, an aberration these days where thousands are the norm. Paan Singh Tomar was up against Fox’s London Paris New York, an aggressively marketed and positively reviewed film in the relatively safe rom-com genre as opposed to a biopic. Click here to read more
Irrfan and Aditi Rao Hydari to star in romantic film
The two were last seen in Yeh Saali Zindagi but were not paired opposite each other
After giving a thrilling performance in Paan Singh Tomar, actor Irrfan is set to romance Aditi Rao Hydari in a new romantic comedy directed by Shivam Nair. The film, produced by Anjum Rizvi, is set in Lucknow. It will have an earthy rustic language with the flavour of the city in it. Nair agrees that the pairing is unusual, but will be the highlight of the film. “We were looking for a young girl to play a street smart girl. Aditi suits the character perfectly. The pair would be one of the highlights of the film,” he said. Click here to read more
London Paris New York Movie Review: A love story sans mush and melodrama
You don’t have to be love-starved or have a great appetite for romantic flicks to enjoy the feel-good experience you indulge in while watching London Paris New York
‘Stay true to yourself’ is one of the dialogues in London Paris New York that plays an integral role in protagonist Ali Zafar’s life. And that is something we feel like saying about the director’s work as well. Anu Menon must have stayed really true to herself to churn out such an honest film, although certain situations seem right out of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s Before Sunrise and its sequel Before Sunset. No sermonising, no long lectures on love or the signs of love; it’s simply a light-hearted narration about two people who have feelings for each other and are limping about in a relationship stuck in deadlines and unfortunate circumstances.
