SATYAMEV JAYATE: Aamir Khan meets Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot
The two bigwigs assured the media that steps will be taken against female foeticide
It seems Aamir Khan’s effort over Satyamev Jayate may have already borne fruit. The first episode that aired on Sunday (May 6) addressed the topic of female foeticide. It also revealed a seven-year-old sting operation that had exposed nearly 100 doctors involved in the practice in various cities and towns of Rajasthan. Since then, there has been no action taken against the doctors, claimed the journalists who had conducted the sting operation, on the show. Aamir today met Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and received an assurance that justice will be meted out. Click here to read more
SATYAMEV JAYATE: Can Aamir Khan really bring about change?
The actor has met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about a subject he brought up on his show, but we are beginning to wonder if that is going to help
When Aamir Khan made his television debut with Satyamev Jayate, a chat show dealing with social evils, he received much applause from his fans and several cynics. Aamir Khan’s ‘Satyamev Jayate’ impact: Madhya Pradesh suspends licence of 65 MTP centres
Aamir Khan has received several bouquets and brickbats for his show Satyamev Jayate but it cannot be denied that he succeeded in bringing an important social issue to the forefront. Not only is everyone suddenly talking about it, but even the otherwise apathetic politicians are suddenly taking notice. The Madhya Pradesh government has suspended the licence of sixty five Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) centres in the state.
However, right now it seems that this is more of a knee-jerk reaction to the episode than a sincere attempt towards solving the problem. These centres have lost their licences not because of any actual proof about them being involved in illegal sex determination tests. Instead, the concerned state health officials claim that these centres have not submitted their reports according to the prescribed format. They have further stated that if these centres submit their reports by Monday, the suspension will be annulled. It is even unclear whether these centres are actually involved in anything illegal at all.Click here to read more
Aamir Khan to meet Rajasthan Chief Minister on Wednesday
Aamir Khan plans to get in touch with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday, May 9 and discuss the issue of female foeticide at length. The actor has already raised this problem on the first episode of his show Satyamev Jayate and expressed his concern over it. Khan claims that his objective is to reduce the rampant practice of female infanticide across the country. On the show, he had taken a pledge to write to Gehlot and request him to take measures to clear pending court cases of doctors charged in the sex determination racket. We wish Aamir the best of luck and hope he gets the much needed support from the government.
