Bollywood greats who left us in 2012: A tribute!

The Indian film industry – be it Bollywood, the South, Bengali or Marathi – lost some very important people in 2012. We pay homage to those who bid adieu, including family of industry folks
The most shocking B-town deaths in 2012 were of filmmaker Yash Chopra and actor Rajesh Khanna. The Yash Raj Films’ head honcho passed away due to dengue and multi-organ failure on October 21, a month before the release of his last directorial project, Jab Tak Hai Jaan. And Khanna, known as India’s first superstar, died of health complications on July 18. Click here to read more

    MF Husain: India’s lost talent

    MF Husain: India’s lost talent

It is with great sadness that Cineswami notes the passing of India’s greatest ever artist, and occasional Bollywood filmmaker Maqbool Fida Husain, who died in distant London on June 9. Several obits will no doubt refer to the great man as the ‘Picasso of India’ but I beg to differ. He was, simply put, the Husain of India
I had occasion to meet the man twice; once when he unveiled his Madhuri obsessive paintings in Delhi, the series that led to Gaja Gamini; and again a couple of years later where the film was screened at London’s Tate Modern museum as part of their Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis exhibition. The late painter delivered a riveting oration on the relationship between painting and cinema. Click here to read more

Arjun Rampal’s Cannes look: Ethnic and stylish

Arjun Rampal’s Cannes look: Ethnic and stylish

A princely looking Arjun Rampal sashayed down the red carpet at Cannes in a Rohit Bal creation, leaving us awestruck
Till a few days ago, Arjun Rampal was extremely confused about what to wear at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival. And after a lot of hemming and hawing, he chose to don close friend’s Rohit Bal’s creation. We are mighty impressed with Arjun’s fashion statement at the festival and we think he looks hot in Jodhpur pants, which he teamed up with a stylish bandhgala jacket. His moustache and those pointy shoes complement his cool royal look, and with beautiful Mehr by his side, the actor looks no less than a handsome prince strutting around with his princess. Mehr looks gorgeous in an orange floor-length gown. Click here to read more

Cinematographer Ashok Mehta critically ill, hospitalised

Cinematographer Ashok Mehta critically ill, hospitalised

One of India’s most accomplished cinematographers, Ashok Mehta is critically ill and is being treated at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. “Yes, I got to know of Ashok’s condition. He’s like a father-figure to me. I’m, in fact, on the way to see him now. I guess he wanted to keep his illness very quiet,” said Arjun Rampal, who is Mehta’s discovery. The fact of Mehta’s illness surfaced during the recording of a new chat show Issi Ka Naam Zindagi Hai, hosted by Raveena Tandon. It was a segment featuring Arjun and one of the people who came on the video monitor to talk about Arjun was Mehta. The cinematographer had discovered Arjun and had cast him in the lead in Moksha, the only feature film that Mehta has directed. Apparently when Arjun saw him rasping his good wishes from a hospital bed, his face went ashen.
Mehta shot some of the most vivid and evocative films including Shekhar Kapoor’s Bandit Queen, Shyam Benegal’s Mandi and Trikaal, Aparna Sen’s 36 Chowringhee Lane and Paroma, Shashi Kapoor’s Utsav, Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak and Kisna and MF Husain’s Gaja Gamini.Click here to read more

Teen Thay Bhai: Losers of epic proportions!

Debutant director Mrigdeep Singh Lamba hopes that hilarity ensues, but the turgid script puts paid to any such notions
There are three of them, the brothers Gill. Chiksy (Om Puri), Happy (Deepak Dobriyal) and Fancy (Shreyas Talpade) being their monikers in the film Teen Thay Bhai. We’ll let the character names pass without comment. Click here to read more
