Move over Bollywood, south rules Indian entertainment
The four southern states together account for more than half of India’s 10,000 movie screens
Bollywood may hog the limelight but the quiet and industrious south Indian entertainment industry is the real growth driver for the Indian film industry and also the creative bellwether, given the sheer number of south Indian films remade in Hindi. IFFI Goa: Jackie Shroff wants to make it better than Cannes
Bollywood actors and industry professionals should not see Goa merely as a holiday destination, but also participate in the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which is hosted in Panaji, said actor Jackie Shroff Wednesday. Speaking to reporters, the plain-speaking Shroff also said that he would urge his friends and colleagues in the industry to participate in IFFI more whole-heartedly. “People come here (Goa) for a holiday. They should also come here during IFFI,” Shroff said, after inaugurating the Raj Kapoor lounge for directors at the IFFI venue. “I am going to request people from the film industries in India, like Marathi, Tamil, Bengali also to come here for the festival…. People keep talking about Cannes, let’s make Goa better than all that,” Shroff said. The 42nd IFFI kicks off in Panaji on Wednesday. Shroff, a regular visitor to Goa for several decades now, said that it has changed over the years and advised the people and state government to ensure that development in the beach state is done in conformation with the environmental needs of the region.

The life and times of the ‘Dadamoni’ of Indian cinema
He was a shy man with average looks, definitely not the Bollywood type; yet destiny had other plans for Ashok Kumar who got into showbiz by chance and never looked back. As the late actor’s 100th birth anniversary dawns Thursday, film historians and fans remember the ‘Dadamoni’ of Indian cinema. Born in a Bengali family October 13, 1911, he did his schooling from Presidency College in Kolkata, and graduated in sciences and law. Not quite starry-eyed, he came to Mumbai in 1936 in search of a job. He got the role of a lab assistant in the newly established Bombay Talkies. But one day film director Himanshu Rai was furious with the lead actor of his film who had vanished without informing him. On the spur of the moment, he laid his eyes on Ashok and wanted the man as the lead in his film Jeevan Naiya. Click here to read more
