Ashvin Kumar: Bollywood’s system has obviously failed

The Little Terrorist director, who is back with a thriller in the form of The Forest, speaks about making inroads into mainstream Bollywood and what keeps him going despite the faulty distribution system

It has been six years since the Little Terrorist was nominated for the Academy Awards, but director Ashvin Kumar is still waiting to see his feature film The Forest hit the screens. His baby has been lying in the cans for five years now. “The Forest was complete and ready to release five years ago. We had a distribution deal with a production company in place. But at some point they just stopped taking my calls. We had everything – high production values, thrilling content and decent actors,” he says. PVR has finally decided to back the film which stars Nandana Sen, Javed Jaffry and Ankur Vikal and release it as a part of an initiative called Director’s Rare. Slated to hit the screens in the month of May, The Forest is a thriller where a husband and lover lock horns over a woman against the backdrop of a forest and a man-eating leopard. ‘Agent Vinod’ gets an average opening at the box office

Saif Ali Khan’s ambitious production may not set the cash registers ringing but might recover its investment

Agent Vinod was a much anticipated film and Saif Ali Khan had left no stone unturned in promoting the film. But despite all the effort, this spy thriller hasn’t managed to get a great opening. According to early estimates the film has made around Rs 9 crore on the first day, which is just about average considering it was a holiday in Maharastra (padwa) and a long weekend. AGNEEPATH box office report: Hrithik Roshan beats SRK

Agneepath crosses RA.One’s record by a big margin and achieves the biggest opening weekend record

The year has begun on a great note for B-town as its first big release, Agneepath has managed to break all records at the box office. The film has earned approximately Rs 65 crore in its opening weekend (first three full days – Thursday, Friday and Saturday – are considered the opening weekend), surpassing the record previously set by Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.One at Rs 52.93 crore. Business is great this July at the Bollywood BO!

For the first time in the history of the Hindi film industry, July has been a blockbuster month

The industry would never have expected that the rainy month of July would end the drought at the BO. But this is exactly what has happened. It’s generally the Diwali and Christmas seasons that are known to bring big bucks to producers and theatre owners. July, on the other hand, is considered a low business time, when children get back to school and rains play spoilsport.
