Failed actor Uday Chopra rubs shoulders with Nicole Kidman
The Dhoom actor’s career gets a new twist
It’s a well-known fact that Uday Chopra’s career is dead in the water. He might appear in Dhoom:3 but the presence of a certain Aamir Khan in that film will dominate everything else, even Abhishek who? My undying love affair
Why, after so many years, am I so in Bollywood’s thrall? It’s the stories, really. The ones you never see turned into films
Last week, a journalist asked me why, after nearly 20 years, I was still so enamoured of Bollywood. What was so compelling about the Hindi film industry? It’s the films, of course, but it’s also the outsized personalities, epic egos and the sheer, beguiling insanity of the place. Bollywood has the best stories—and I’m not talking about the ones on screen. Here are a few tales that I love to tell again and again. Click here to read more
Happy birthday, Urmila Matondkar
She shimmied her way into stardom and into our hearts 17 years ago with her sassy dance moves in Rangeela. A star, and more importantly a fine performer was born overnight with the Ram Gopal Varma film. The feisty diva portrayed diverse roles and delivered power-packed performances in films like Satya, Bhoot, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Ek Haseena Thi and Pinjar. Today, the effervescent Marathi mulgi celebrates her 38th birthday.
Urmila Matondkar is known not only for her sexy moves but also for strong performances. Her first role as a child artiste in Shekhar Kapoor’s 1981 film Masoom gave us a glimpse into her acting repertoire. She later debuted with Bade Ghar Ki Beti, and acted in movies such as Chamatkar, Narasimha and Aa Gale Lag Jaa, but it was with Rangeela in 1995 that she shot into the limelight. Jai-Veeru turn police officers for ‘Marathi Sholay’!
Sholay is all set to be remade again. And this time on a regional level. But after enduring many unsuccessful remakes of this cult movie, should we really be looking forward to it?
We guess it’s time to replace ‘kitne aadmi the?’ with ‘kitne remakes the?’ (How many remakes were there?). Sholay has inspired the making of Subhash Ghai’s Karma (1986), Sibte Hassan Rizvi’s Joshiley (1989), Ajit Diwani’s Ramgarh Ke Sholay (1991), Rajkumar Santoshi’s China Gate (1998), Kanti Shah’s Duplicate Sholay (2002) and Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag (2007). We’re still recovering from the aftermath of RGV’s Aag when the taazi khabar at our doorsteps is that Sholay will soon have a version in Marathi. “The original Sholay cast a deep spell on our minds. We can’t change that. So I am presenting a serious story in a comic form and it is called Marathi Sholay,” said Marathi film director Vickey Kharat in an interview. Click here to read more
Nicole Kidman to do a Bollywood item number for just Rs 5 crore?
The Hollywood star might have another connection with B-town after Moulin Rouge!
It is not just Tom Cruise who has an India connection now (thanks to MI4). His ex-wife and Hollywood star Nicole Kidman is apparently a part of an upcoming Bollywood project directed by Rumi Jaffery. Reportedly, the Australia star has been approached by Jaffery to do a desi item number in his forthcoming film Gali Gali Mein Chor Hai. Bollywood is not new to Nicole. In her film Moulin Rouge, Anu Malik’s item song Chamma Chamma from China Gate had been used by director Baz Luhrmann with full credits. Kidman had also appeared in an ad with RA.One hottie Arjun Rampal and Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali. Click here to read more
