    Jagjit Singh passes away

    Renowned singer, Jagjit Singh passed away on Monday morning at 8am due to brain haemorrhage. The ghazal and bhajan singer had been under observation at the Lilavati hospital since September 23. He is survived by his wife Chitra Singh. His son, Vivek Singh had died earlier in 1990 in a road accident. Both husband and wife had gained their fame in the field of music. The ‘Ghazal king’ has rendered his voice in Hindi films like Prem Geet, Saath Saath, Arth, Sarfarosh and Tarqeeb. Besides Hindi, Jagjit Singh has also given his sung in Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali. The singer had also given his voice for ex-prime minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee’s poems in the albums Nayi Disha and Samvedna.

    Family members, the music fraternity and fans bid a tearful farewell to ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh at his funeral here Tuesday. Jagjit Singh’s brother Kartar Singh along with his grandsons Armaan and Umer Chowdhary conducted his last rites. Jagjit Singh had lost his only son in a car accident in 1990 and considered Kartar’s family and children as his own. Jagjit Singh, 70, died here Monday in suburban Bandra’s Lilavati Hospital where he was admitted September 23 after he suffered a brain haemorrhage. He is survived by his wife Chitra. His mortal remains were brought to his Pedder Road residence in south Mumbai Tuesday morning, where many celebrities, friends and fans paid their final tributes to the soulful singer. The mortal remains where then taken to Chandanwadi crematorium in Marine Lines in south Mumbai. Prominent names in the music industry like renowned classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj, lyricist-composer Gulzar, Javed Akthar, actor-politician Raj Babbar, Vinod Khanna, actors Shabana Azmi, Shahrukh Khan, Raza Murad, singers Roopkumar Rathod, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Mika, Ila Arun, music composers Kalyanji, Shekhar Ravjiani and filmmakers Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai, Madhur Bhandarkar attended the funeral with moist-eyes and silent prayers. “I have known him through his songs since 1963 and I credit him for making this non-filmy form of music a household name,” said Jasraj. A Padma Bhushan recipient, Jagjit Singh had sung for many popular Hindi films. He also sang in several languages including Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati and Nepali. “It is an irreparable loss to everyone. It feels extremely strange to see the maestro covered in a white cloth ready to leave us,” said Sonu Niigaam. The singer gave the industry memorable numbers like Hontho se chhoo lo tum, Tumko dekha toh yeh khayal aaya, Jhuki jhuki si nazar, Hoshwalon ko khabar kya and Badi nazuk hai among others.

    Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, who died Monday of cerebral haemorrhage, will be cremated at south Mumbai’s Chandanwadi Crematorium at 4.30pm Tuesday. The cremation is expected to draw several celebrities along with his relatives from native Rajasthan. The legendary singer died at the age of 70, after being treated for brain haemorrhage since he was admitted to Bandra’s Lilavati Hospital on September 23. He was to perform with Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali on the day he was taken to hospital. Singh leaves behind wife Chitra Singh, also a ghazal singer.

    Jagjit Singh was admitted to Lilavati hospital in Bandra, Mumbai on Friday after he suffered a brain hemorrhage and was in a critical state.  Doctors at the Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra performed a life-saving surgery on him, hospital sources said.  Latest updates suggest Jagjit Singh is still under observation and is stated to be in critical condition in ICU.     Seems that the prayers of the millions of fans of the ghazal singer Jagjit Singh are working wonders, as we heard that though critical, his condition is stable. Singh was admitted to Lilavati hospital in suburban Bandra on Friday, he is still in the ICU and under observation. His health is stable,” Lilavati Hospital, spokesperson, Sudhir Dagaonkar told PTI on Saturday. Hospital authorities said his condition was “stable yet critical.” Clarifying the false alarms about Singh’s death, singer Sonu Nigam posted a message on Twitter, “Jagjitji is alive.     Acclaimed ghazal singer Jagjit Singh was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai today after he suffered a brain haemorrhage and is in a critical state, doctors attending to him said.
