Hollywood stars lie about Bollywood, fuelled by Indians

Hollywood stars lie about Bollywood, fuelled by Indians

Tom Cruise watches Hindi films, and Robert Pattinson claims that he loves DDLJ. Really?
The Indian media rolled over, wagged their tails and panted in ecstasy when the august Hollywood personage that is Tom Cruise said that he’d act in a Bollywood film, sort of. “I love watching Hindi movies. There are many Hindi movies that come out every year but I do watch a few of them. If offered a Bollywood film I would never say no. I would love to do it,” were Cruise’s exact words. He was speaking at the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in Mumbai. Now, there is no point calling Cruise a liar. He’s in front of a huge crowd of fans (many of them who were paid Rs 400 each to show up and cheer, but that’s another story) and he’s never going to say, “a pox on your piddly little industry. Me and Bollywood? Never!” in front of Indian fans and more importantly millions of Indians watching him on television, thanks to the potentially large box office for his films. Of course he would never say no, but there would be qualifiers. If say, for example, Mahesh Bhatt were to offer him Jism 2 opposite pornstar Sunny Leone, would Cruise say yes? Jism 2 is very much a Bollywood film and Bhatt is a Bollywood pillar or at least an outhouse – take your pick. If the hypothetical offer were to be made, it would have to be through the proper channels with agents etc being involved. Then there would be the question of remuneration. Cruise’s average fee for a single film is usually more than the entire budget of a big budget Bollywood film. Click here to read more

‘Spider-Man’ destroys Bollywood: India box office report

‘Spider-Man’ destroys Bollywood: India box office report

The Amazing Spider-Man has got the highest opening weekend ever for a Hollywood film in India. With the box office collections at Rs 34.5 crore, it beat MI4, Avatar and The Avengers
It doesn’t happen too often, but when it does, it happens with a vengeance. India’s spider senses were set tingling with the release of The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield as the rebooted web slinger and our own Irrfan in a sadly minuscule role. It wasn’t Irrfan that Indian audiences flocked to see – it was just good solid Hollywood action in the original English and dubbed into Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and in 3D, 2D and IMAX formats. Pakistan goes to ‘Waar’

    Pakistan goes to ‘Waar’

Lollywood’s most expensive and slick film is all set to release on Valentine’s Day, and it’s not about love
That the Pakistani film industry is in seemingly irreversible decline is a well-known fact by now, dominated as it is by our Bollywood offerings. However, every once in a while, our neighbours pull off a stunning cinematic coup. For example, Shoaib Mansoor’s sensitive take on Islam in the modern age, Khuda Kay Liye, was a massive success on both sides of the border. And now, come Valentine’s Day, Warner Bros will release Bilal Lashari’s film on counter-terrorism, Waar. Alas, only in Pakistan for now with maybe a few other international playdates. At $8 million (that’s Rs 42 crore to you and me), the film is easily Pakistan’s biggest film of all time. And it stars Shaan, who Indian audiences will remember from Khuda Kay Liye and is Pakistan’s Shahrukh, Salman and Aamir all rolled into one. The film also stars Shamoon Abbasi, who is a popular television actor.
