President Pratibha Patil condoled the death of legendary actor Dev Anand, saying the film industry has lost a creative talent and a man who personified the spirit of graceful ageing with dignity. In her statement, the President said: “Anand was a legendary film artiste as well as a producer, director and writer who adorned the Hindi cinema with great distinction. He delighted Hindi cinema fans with his vivacious acting and as a popular romantic hero of his times.” The 88-year-old actor passed away after a massive cardiac arrest in London on Saturday night. Recalling his movies, Patil said: “He shall always be remembered by a generation of film watchers for his exemplified acting in the movies – ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Munimji’, ‘Guide’, ‘Johny Mera Naam’, ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ and ‘Des Pardes’. In his passing away, the film industry has lost a creative talent and a man who personified the spirit of graceful ageing with dignity.” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too condoled the legend’s death, saying, “Dev Anand was a great artiste who entertained generations of cinema lovers over five decades. I join millions of his fans in mourning his death.” Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, “He will forever be remembered as Hindi cinema’s evergreen hero.” The iconic star is survived by his wife, former actor Kalpana Karthik, a son and a daughter.
