Sadda Haq ban: making a mockery of the CBFC

Sadda Haq ban: making a mockery of the CBFC

Punjabi film Sadda Haq is a cinematic look at the separatist movement in the state from the militants’ point of view and is purportedly based on true events
First of all, let us clarify that we are not referring to the AR Rahman’s hit song from Rockstar. That’s so 2011. We are talking about Mandeep Benipal’s Punjabi film Sadda Haq that was due to release last Friday but was banned at the last minute by the governments of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi on the grounds that it might fan the flames of communal disharmony. This is Benipal’s second film after 2010’s superhit Ekam: Son of Soil. Sadda Haq is a cinematic look at the separatist movement in the Punjab from the militants’ point of view and is purportedly based on true events. Click here to read more

Rani Mukerji to play Marathi ‘mulgi’, Jimmy Shergill is the Punjabi ‘munda’

Rani Mukerji to play Marathi ‘mulgi’, Jimmy Shergill is the Punjabi ‘munda’

Cineswami’s take on the new developments in Bollywood
Malayalam cinema heartthrob Prithviraj Sukumaran is all set to bow in the Hindi film industry, following in the footsteps of his illustrious predecessors Mammootty and Mohanlal. And no, the accent won’t be a problem, as he will play a Tamil painter in Sachin Kundalkar’s Bollywood debut. Aaiya will see Prithviraj romance Rani Mukerji who made a stirring comeback earlier this year with No One Killed Jessica. Mukerji will play a Marathi mulgi. Kundalkar is known for acclaimed Marathi films Gandh and Nirop. Anurag Kashyap will continue his dalliance with offbeat cinema by producing Aaiya. Prithviraj will dub the Hindi dialogue himself. The last time he spoke some Hindi on screen was in Dr Biju’s Veettilekkulla Vazhi (The Way Home). Let’s see if the Kerala hunk can do what no South Indian hero has done before – sustain a long career in Bollywood. Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Venkatesh and Nagarjuna all enjoyed some success before deciding to return to the south while the jury is still out on Rana Daggubati.
Another actor who had limited success is Bollywood has found his groove elsewhere. Jimmy Shergill is quite the star in Punjabi films and he’s added another feather to his turban by turning producer. Click here to read more

Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Zoya Akhtar’s true confessions at IFFI Goa

Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Zoya Akhtar’s true confessions at IFFI Goa

Cineswami managed to know some secrets of the Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara stars and director, at the 42nd International Film Festival of India in Goa
The secret is out. Abhay Deol and Zoya Akhtar have confessed that they don’t watch non-Bollywood films, that is, films made outside Mumbai in the other Indian states. Kalki Koechlin said that she’d watched a few Marathi films, but only when she was, in her own word, “dragged” to screenings by hubby Anurag Kashyap. The trio were on a panel at the just concluded Film Bazaar organised by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) that ran alongside the International Film Festival of India in Goa. Interestingly, though the discussion was about new trends in Indian cinema, the august panel spoke only about Bollywood. The trio were jolted out of their smug mutual back scratching when an intrepid and very polite member of the audience asked them the loaded question about whether they watched films in other Indian languages.
