AARAKSHAN REVIEW: Battle of the bores

AARAKSHAN REVIEW: Battle of the bores

The hugely anticipated film pits righteousness against politics and goes on about both to little effect, but the stars do their jobs well
Battle lines are drawn. On one side, a righteous teacher. On the other, a group of ruthless business-minded hucksters who want to sell education and the right to it to those who can pay. Politics in a historical context seems to be what makes director Prakash Jha’s cookie crumble Click here to read more

    India, the fascist state

    India, the fascist state

Banning Aarakshan merely illustrates the fact that India is a democracy in name only and freedom of expression is a myth
It is uncharitable for certain prominent, not to mention loudmouthed and incoherent television commentators to suggest that the brouhaha surrounding Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan is merely a publicity stunt. Granted that in today’s over-saturated media scenario every filmmaker will go all out to promote his or her film, but surely Jha doesn’t have the governments of three states in his pocket? Persuading Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh to ban the film and getting Maharashtra to seek cuts just for the sake of publicity is too daft and far-fetched an idea, even for the imbeciles who populate television today. Amitabh Bachchan: I have a casteless surname

Big B talks about his role in Aarakshan and shares his thoughts on sensitive topics like reservation and the caste system in our country
I am on a large studio floor, where the cast and director are going through the film promotion plans (read interviews) for Aarakshan. Legendary superstar Amitabh Bachchan appears to be in a happy mood. When he is not giving bytes to journalists, he sits on his special seat (three chairs stacked for comfortable height) and intones lines of his favourite poetry in his deep baritone voice. And that makes it worth waiting for him to talk to me… Click here to read more

Amitabh Bachchan does not reserve judgement on UP government’s move

Aarakshan releases next week and the state government in Uttar Pradesh is putting a damper on promotional activities for the film
Reservation is a sensitive issue in this country. And any argument on the matter will lead to controversy, if not public protest. Prakash Jha and his team are courting just that with what is happening in Lucknow right now. The cast of the soon-to-release Aarakshan, led by the director, planned to stage a grand show in the city, with a debate on caste-based reservations in Indian society. Permissions had been granted and everything was ready; Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Manoj Bajpayee and Prateik were headed to Lucknow to participate. Now the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh has taken back the permits and refused to allow the event to take place, on the grounds of “apprehension of breach of peace”. Click here to read more
