BOOK REVIEW: Anupama Chopra’s ‘First Day First Show’
The author’s knowledge and deep understanding of Hindi cinema reflects in her writings
In her book on Shahrukh Khan – King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema – film critic and journalist Anupama Chopra gives a background of the industry and the business of Bollywood over the years at regular intervals. This helps in understanding the backdrop against which the star is emerging, his decisions and risks, and eventual rise as a superstar. Chopra’s knowledge and a deep understanding of Hindi cinema reflect in her collection of writings bound together in her latest book, First Day First Show – definitely an account ‘from the Bollywood trenches’, as the tagline goes.
What makes the book stand apart is the total lack of bitchiness and animosity, perhaps because the author is also the wife of a successful filmmaker (Vidhu Vinod Chopra). Imagine, she must be in on the juiciest gossip (though she may deny it) and yet, she has to carefully draw a line between her professional and personal lives. Click here to read more
DELHI BELLY Review: Aiming for culthood!
There is no one called DK Bose in the film, but that doesn’t stop Delhi Belly from being added to our all-time fave list
Before Delhi Belly begins, you see the trailer of Ram Gopal Varma’s next film, Not a Love Story, with a punchline that reads: ‘A story from the heart but not for the fainthearted’. That better describes Delhi Belly! Sitting through all the ‘crap’ that happens onscreen is no joke – with close-ups of male bum cracks, excreta and farting sounds all through, plus swear words and simulated sex scenes.
Chocolate-boy Imran Khan has moved into a different league altogether, thanks to this one. Click here to read more
Uma Thurman wants to watch ‘Chak De’: Shilpa Shukla
She was one of the few women who stood up to Shahrukh Khan in the acting department in her memorable performance in Chak De! India. And possibly one of a rare breed who can afford to say, “Kabhi kabhi jyaada achhi acting kar lo toh bhi gadbad ho jaati hai”!
We talk to Shilpa Shukla about her latest film, Bhindi Baazaar Inc, her passion for photography and working with the King Khan… Click here to read more
Is Shahrukh Khan having an affair with Priyanka Chopra?
After being loyal to his wife for 20 years, Shahrukh Khan is reportedly seeing his Don 2 co-star Priyanka Chopra and they are quite an item
Shahrukh Khan has always maintained a very ‘loyal to my wife’ image in tinseltown, even as he romanced so many beauties on the big screen. Seeing pictures of Gauri and SRK in film and fashion magazines only added to the aura of their ‘sacred’ marital relationship. The only leading ladies he was rumoured to have had a ‘thing’ with are his fave co-stars Juhi Chawla and Kajol. The gossip seemed obvious, since he had some of the most successful films of his career with them. Apart from that, it was Deepa Sahi in Maya Memsaab whom he got intimate with in order to show great chemistry in that famous sex scene. Otherwise, King Khan’s image has been the cleanest amongst the Khans, especially where extra-marital goings-on have been in focus. But it seems that now, after fathering two lovely kids and doting on Gauri for a couple of decades, Shahrukh is going through a mid-life crisis. (Or a mid-wife crisis, shall we say?) These days, showbiz parties and gatherings are not complete without people talking about the torrid affair SRK is allegedly having with his Don 2 co-star, hottie Priyanka Chopra. MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN Review: Katrina Kaif holds a crumbling film together
The actor enacts her lively, spunky, rockstar babe role with ease, as against the mellowed Imran
Yet another shaadi flick from Bollywood – and Yash Raj Films. This time, starring Katrina Kaif, Imran Khan and Ali Zafar. While the film’s title (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) might make you cringe and think it’s a version of Sorry Bhai, it’s not. Neither is it in the genre of Band Baaja Baaraat or Hum Aapke Hain Koun! Rather, MBKD is lighthearted, but tries too hard to be funny at places. Click here to read more
Aamir Khan’s role model is Hollywood star Brad Pitt!
For Dhoom:3, the actor wants to have a physique like Brad showed off in Fight Club
Aamir Khan had always been compared to Hollywood actor-director Tom Hanks for similarity in looks and perfectionist attitude (both are even married twice over). Rauf Ahmed, former editor of Filmfare, remembers Gautam Rajadhyaksha
The ace photographer brought in a new dimension to how celebrity portraits were shot
Gautam Rajadhyaksha, Bollywood’s most celebrated photographer, passed away after a massive heart attack in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, September 13. Rauf Ahmed, former editor of magazines like Filmfare, Zee Premiere, Screen, etc, was one of the photographer’s closest associates and among the first to recognise his talent. Rauf says, “When I took over as the editor of Filmfare in 1986, it was a very old-fashioned magazine and I revived it. Gautam had a very important role in this. He brought in a pictorial quality very rare in film magazines. Earlier, there was more focus to show the person’s achievement rather than how the picture was.” Click here to read more
