Chitrangda Singh and Karan Johar to host first ever Times of India Film Awards in Canada

Chitrangda Singh and Karan Johar to host first ever Times of India Film Awards in Canada

Since the IIFA Awards 2013 will not be held in Vancouver, the Canadian government will now host the Times of India Film Awards, informs Cineswami
The International Indian Film Academy Awards or the IIFAs are representative of Bollywood – big, bright, colourful, and like the awards handed out every year, ultimately irrelevant. Who won the IIFAs last year? Don’t remember? Not to worry, nobody does, unlike say, the Filmfare Awards. Click here to read more

The celestial status of our stars

The celestial status of our stars

At the IIFA awards in Toronto, I saw again how crazy we are about our film stars. Is it this madness that keeps Bollywood from being flattened by Hollywood? Perhaps
I’ve always known that Indians suffer from a particularly virulent case of movie madness, but just how sick we are was made apparent last month when I went to the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards in Toronto. The 12th edition of the IIFA marked its North American premiere. Clearly, neither the organisers nor the Royal Fairmont Hotel, where the Bollywood contingent was staying, had anticipated the unabashed love that local South Asians have for Hindi movies. Everyone veered between total hysteria and shell shock. Click here to read more

‘Rockstar’ director Imtiaz Ali has a new ‘Girlfriend’

‘Rockstar’ director Imtiaz Ali has a new ‘Girlfriend’

Cineswami takes a look at the happenings in Bollywood this week
Rockstar has just hit cinemas, but director Imtiaz Ali is not one to rest on his laurels. He’s already into his next venture; a remake of 2009’s Korean hit My Girlfriend Is An Agent, where Ali will don the hat of creative producer. And no, the film won’t be a rip-off as Bollywood normally does. UTV Motion Pictures have officially acquired the remake rights and are on board as co-producers. This will be the first film for Ali’s wife Preety’s newly formed company PI Films. Choreographer Bosco, that is 50 percent of the Bosco-Caesar choreographer duo, will make his directorial debut. The film was a runaway hit in Korea and tells the story of two spies, once in love but now bitter rivals, on a mission to stop a Russian crime group from stealing an advanced chemical weapon. Wonder how that plotline will be transposed to an Indian context, but the talented Imtiaz is bound to find a way. Click here to read more

Freida Pinto gets rave reviews for ‘Trishna’ in Toronto

Freida Pinto gets rave reviews for ‘Trishna’ in Toronto

Composer Amit Trivedi’s score for the film has also been appreciated
She did not have that much to do in Slumdog Millionaire, and neither Miral nor Rise of the Planet of the Apes did very much for Freido Pinto as a good actor. But if the early reviews of her latest film, the Michael Winterbottom-directed Trishna are anything to go by, the gal can indeed act. One reviewer says that she brings a “fragile dignity” to her role, while others say that Ms P looks gorgeous Click here to read more

Mother-daughter duo Hema and Esha smirk at Bipasha…

Mother-daughter duo Hema and Esha smirk at Bipasha…

Veteran Hema Malini getting complacent after years of success is justifiable, but what does daughter Esha Deol have on her filmi plate that she can boast about? Apart from decent dancing skills and the ‘Deol’ label, this chick has little to show off…
Bollywood’s various stars were seen having a ball recently at Toronto during the IIFA awards. Just like a typical film awards function, it had OTT performances and gags galore, but what was striking about the whole affair was that there was a sense of pride on everybody’s faces while representing their fraternity. Amidst the fanfare, we witnessed an incident that definitely makes for some spicy gossip. Click here to read more

    Anushka nabbed at the airport!

    Anushka nabbed at the airport!

The BBB girl may be grabbing plum projects, but she was caught at the airport this morning with undeclared goods
Another one has bitten the dust. Anushka Sharma, on her way home from the IIFA Awards at Toronto with a best actress award, was stopped at Customs this morning for carrying undeclared jewellery worth Rs 45 lakh. But that is a small hiccup on her road to success.  The girl who came from nowhere special, did some modelling and then grabbed the cherry on the filmi pie with Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi with Badshaah Khan. Since then, she has been making it big with A-listers in every film – Badmaash Company with Shahid Kapoor, Patiala House with Akshay Kumar, the superhit Band Baaja Baaraat (though her co-star Ranveer Singh was no biggie, really, until after the movie released) and now Yash Raj’s next with SRK and Katrina Kaif and…hold your breath…Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest with Ajay Devgn. Salman Khan not the IIFA ambassador?

They say they will attend, then they say they will not attend…who is going to be the main man at IIFA this year?
Now we are truly confused. We gave you the story of how Salman had taken over IIFA ambassador-ship from Amitabh Bachchan for this year’s event in Toronto. And we speculated on how that came about, what with Akshay Kumar being the logical main man in Canada and all that. Click here to read more
