Cinematographer Ashok Mehta critically ill, hospitalised
One of India’s most accomplished cinematographers, Ashok Mehta is critically ill and is being treated at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. “Yes, I got to know of Ashok’s condition. He’s like a father-figure to me. I’m, in fact, on the way to see him now. I guess he wanted to keep his illness very quiet,” said Arjun Rampal, who is Mehta’s discovery. The fact of Mehta’s illness surfaced during the recording of a new chat show Issi Ka Naam Zindagi Hai, hosted by Raveena Tandon. It was a segment featuring Arjun and one of the people who came on the video monitor to talk about Arjun was Mehta. The cinematographer had discovered Arjun and had cast him in the lead in Moksha, the only feature film that Mehta has directed. Apparently when Arjun saw him rasping his good wishes from a hospital bed, his face went ashen.
Mehta shot some of the most vivid and evocative films including Shekhar Kapoor’s Bandit Queen, Shyam Benegal’s Mandi and Trikaal, Aparna Sen’s 36 Chowringhee Lane and Paroma, Shashi Kapoor’s Utsav, Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak and Kisna and MF Husain’s Gaja Gamini.Click here to read more
Mario Miranda: Miss Rajni Nimbupani misses you!
The iconic cartoonist passed away on December 11, and the exotic – and pretty realistic – Bollywood character he created doesn’t know what to do now…
Remember Miss Rajni Nimbupani? No, she doesn’t have anything to do with Superstar Rajinikanth. For those of you born in the 1990s, she was a bootilicious babe inspired by Bollywood and created by Mario Miranda. We have some of her older pictures for you and, believe you us, if you look at them you’ll think Vidya Balan and her dirty act in The Dirty Picture are not in the least bit sexy! Cartoonist Mario wanted Rajni Nimbupani to be sexy and saucy, and he made sure she got rid of the extra pounds when she came back after her much-needed break in some faraway exotic location. Sadly, the only other Bollywood connection that the iconic Goan artist had was a Hindi film shot in his home. Yes, Shyam Benegal’s Trikaal, starring Leela Naidu and Naseeruddin Shah, was shot in Mario’s heritage house in Goa. Wethinks a film will be made on this great soul one day – or it should be. And Rajni is hopeful she will star in it, now that she is on her way to becoming a veteran as well! And with Mario gone, she doesn’t know what to do with her life now – besotted as she was with him. Can we help? Sadly, no, ‘coz we miss him too…. Click here to read more
