Biriyani movie review: Karthi, Premgi Amaren and Hansika Motwani cook a satisfactory Biriyani!
The Tamil film has hit the theatres and here’s the review. Read and decide if you wanna watch it or not
A sumptuous Biriyani may not always be filling because at times it’s too starchy to be digested. This is applicable to Venkat Prabhu’s Biriyani, which despite being fairly satisfying is not excellent because it gets too starchy due to unwanted ingredients. While the use of situational comedy works to some extent but what we see in some scenes is not humorous but downright awful and the double entendres directed at women are uncalled for. Kannada producers feel foolish about banning Nikita
The ban imposed on Kannada actor Nikita Thukral by the Kannada producers for being responsible for marital discord between actor Darshan and his wife was lifted. The question now being raised is why actor Darshan himself has not been banned. The withdrawal came three days after Nikita was banned for an alleged affair with Kannada star Darshan, who is now in jail for assaulting his wife Vijayalakshmi. The producers who effectively held her responsible for marital discord in the Darshan household now concede it was unnecessary. Kannada Producers’ Association Muniratna Naidu said, “We admit now that the ban was foolish. We’ve wronged an actress who was good and kind hearted.” Nikita, who has been keeping a low profile till now, reacted with a sigh of relief.

‘The Dirty Picture’ gets clearance in Andhra Pradesh
The Andhra Pradesh High Court dismissed a writ petition by the kin of late southern actor, Silk Smitha seeking a ban on The Dirty Picture. Justice Vilas V Afzalpurkar dismissed the petition of Silk Smitha’s brother V Naga Varaprasad Rao, who wanted the court to stop the film’s release. The petitioner objected to the way his late sister was portrayed in the film. He also claimed that the filmmakers never took the family’s consent to make the film on Silk Smitha. The court dismissed the petition after the filmmakers clarified that the film was not based on the life of the actor. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) also conveyed to the court that there is no scope for the court to review the decision of the censor board as the filmmakers themselves have denied that the film was based on Silk Smitha’s life. Varaprasad earlier told the court that the censor board did not respond to his notice, and urged it not to clear the movie. He claimed Smitha, played by Vidya Balan, was portrayed as a woman of loose character through obscene scenes. He also said that the private life of his elder sister was different from what is being portrayed in the film. Silk Smitha, whose real name was Vijayalakshmi, hailed from Andhra and played sleazy roles in many south Indian films in the 1980s. The actor, who acted in over 200 films, allegedly committed suicide in 1996 at the age of 36. Starring Vidya Balan and produced by Balaji Telefilms, The Dirty Picture is set to be released across the country on Friday.

Darshan’s fans are ‘shocked’ – because he is a star, yes, but also because of the nature of his offense. Wife-beating is hardly a serious crime, our source heard them say. Condemning the ‘Challenging Star’, actor Raghavendra Rajkumar said, “Any person raising a hand on a woman is unacceptable. I would pray for the Darshan couple’s quick recovery and that they settle down in life fast.” This incident has been a reality check for the society at large to see how biased and sexist we have become. It was a major relief when the Kannada Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) revoked the ban on actor Nikitha, who was allegedly responsible for the unfortunate incident.
