Despite underperforming at the box office, Akshay Kumar's Pad Man crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the global box office. In seven days, the biographical social drama has grossed Rs 80.50 crore (nett. Rs 62.87 crore) in India and Rs 22.50 crore in the international markets. The film now stands with the grand total of Rs 103 crore at the worldwide box office.
Talking about Pad Man, the film is based on the life of Tamil Nadu-based social activist, Arunachalam Muruganantham. Akshay Kumar portrays the central role in the film, who finds a way to make cheap, affordable sanitary napkins for the women in his village. It also features Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in key roles and is directed by R. Balki, who has previously helmed movies like Ki And Ka, Shamitabh, Paa and Cheeni Kum.
The film has received positive reviews unanimously especially for its direction and star performances. Our editior-in-chief and critic Tushar Joshi gave four stars to the film and said, “Pad Man is quite a different story with a totally different subject and narrative. The biggest plus point of the film is its emotional connect with the central character of Laxmi. You end up not only empathising with him but also stay invested in his story till the very end. Akshay does a fantastic job of making Laxmi extremely relatable. His big speech scene in the climax showcases his growth and immense maturity as an actor.” Anyway, do you think Pad Man will enter the Rs 100 crore club at the box office?
