This week, there were four major releases in our theatres, three Hindi movies and one Hollywood. And what looks like a trend that turns up from time to time, it is the Hollywood movie that trumped the Bollywood releases that released along with it. While Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan's romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania continues its dream run from last, this week's crown goes to Disney's Beauty and The Beast. Starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, the musical romantic fantasy had scored better figures than its Bollywood competitors, Machine, Aa Gaya Hero and Trapped.
As per reports, Beauty and The Beast grossed around Rs 1.5 crores on Friday, which was more than the gross collections of its closest competitor, which is Machne. The debut of Mustafa, who is the son of Abbas Burmawalla of Abbas - Mustan had grossed about Rs 55 lacs. The romantic thriller that also stars Kiara Advani in the lead got poor reviews, but a better opening than the other Hindi releases. Vikramaditya Motwane's Trapped, which got some great reviews for its premise and Rajkummar Rao's performance, only managed to gross about Rs 25 lacs on opening day. However, perhaps strong word of mouth publicity might help the movie in coming days.
The movie with the poorest collections of all was undoubtedly Govinda's comeback movie as a lead, Aa Gaya Hero. The shoddily directed movie only got around Rs 20 lacs on day one.
With good reviews pouring in for Beauty and The Beast, the movie will surely pick up on the weekend, and will work with the family audiences especially in the multiplexes. As for the Hindi movie releases, it will take more than luck to sail them through.
