After witnessing a massive dip on Monday, Irrfan Khan and Kirti Kulhari starrer Blackmail remained steady on its fifth day at the box office. The black comedy raked in 1.52 crore yesterday and now stands with the grand total of Rs 14.42 crore. Black is expected to earn around Rs 17 crore in its opening week at the box office. Since the film is made on the reasonable budget of Rs 18 crore, Blackmail will recover its investment through its theatrical run itself.
The film has faced stiff competition from holdover releases like Baaghi 2 and Hichki, which are still dominating the box office. Since Blackmail primarily caters to Tier - 1 cities and multiplexes audience, the performance of the film in single-screens is quite low. Blackmail depicts the life of a middle-aged married-man stuck in a full day job and unexciting life, but things turn after he finds that his wife is having an extramarital affair.
Blackmail is directed by Abhinay Deo, who previously helmed films like Game, Delhi Belly and Force 2. It also features Arunoday Singh and Divya Dutta in pivotal roles. The film received rave reviews from the critics. Our critic Ankita Chaurasia gave Blackmail four stars and said, “Watching Blackmail is like riding a roller-coaster – you don’t know as to what will happen next but the mere thrill of it is enough to make you hop on. With so much amusement, it is no wonder that you don’t want the ride to end. It would be criminal to miss this one. An absolute must-watch!”
