While Mumbai Saga struggled over its first two days in theatres due to reinstated COVID-19 restrictions and night curfews, the John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi gangster movie has managed to spring a huge surprise on Sunday by bringing in Rs. 3.52 crore nett at the box office. While the number isn't huge by any stretch of the imagination for a big crime film, featuring a multi-star cast, set on a huge canvas, the Sanjay Gupta directorial has witnessed a jump in excess of 50%, which has taken its first weekend total to Rs. 8.74 crore nett. Given that these aren't normal circumstances, the collection is more than respectable.
Mumbai Saga day-wise breakup:
Day 1 (Friday): Rs. 2.82 crore nett
Day 2 (Saturday): Rs. 2.40 crore nett
Day 3 (Sunday): Rs. 3.52 crore nett
Total (1st Weekend): Rs. 8.74 crore nett
The biggest surprise has come in Maharashtra despite several key territories like Thane and Pune facing heavy restrictions and limited screenings. Even the rest of India picked up well on Sunday after major centres in Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore and Bhopal were shut down due to a surge in coronavirus cases. Punjab and some key areas in the North couldn't report an upward trend though as many cinema halls there have been completely shut due to heave restrictions.
Taking all these factors into consideration, particularly the obstacles Mumbai Saga has faced in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Prades, where John Abraham has a good fan-following, the movie has posted a decent total for the weekend. All eyes will now be on the weekdays and the kind of holds the film can achieve to paint a clearer picture if it can at least achieve an average box office verdict, which'd be a moral victory in itself given the kind of hurdles Bollywood is facing these days.
