In the recent times, we have noticed that every genre in the filmmaking, be it a comedy, romance or action, is getting acceptance from the audience if the content strikes the right chord with them. But honestly, the horror genre has not turned out to be a box office friendly venture in Bollywood and films like Pari, Ek Thi Daayan and Dobaara: See Your Evil are recent examples of that. Though the last two weeks have turned the tables for this niche genre thanks to the extraordinary box office performances of Stree and The Nun.
Both these films released back to back in the last two weeks and had clashed with other movies at the box office. But ironically both the ventures outperformed their competitors during their release by a huge margin. Well, this is quite surprising as none of these films has any big names associated with them. But the business of Stree and The Nun opened the door for the horror genre in the Indian market.
Talking about Stree, the Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor starrer horror-comedy was made on the economical budget of Rs 20 crore and now is all set to enter the elite club of Rs 100 crore club. We must say, it is one of the most profitable films of Bollywood. Coming to The Nun, the prequel of The Conjuring has opened to a phenomenal response and earned over Rs 25 crore in its opening weekend. With both these films working at the ticket windows, we must say that even the horror genre has immense potential if marketing strategy and research is done well.
BL Says: The success of Stree and The Nun might help upcoming horror films like Amaavas and Halloween at the box office.
