With massive hype surrounding the film, Shankar's magnum opus has set the cash registers ringing despite mixed reviews
Director Shankar's I starring Vikram, Amy Jackson, Upen Patel, Suresh Gopi and Santhanam, has opened to tremendous response from the audience. The film which released in South of India on January 14, has minted Rs 34.74 crore worldwide on the opening day. While the film has been garnering mixed reviews, it doesn't seemed to have affected the film's showing on the opening day, thanks to the hype around the film.
In Tamil Nadu, I has managed to rake in Rs 9.62 crore at box office. While these figures are humungous, Vikram's I has failed to surpass Rajinikanth's Lingaa (Rs 12.8 crore) and Vijay's Kaththi (Rs 12.5 crore) in terms of first day collections in TN box office. In Andhra Pradesh and Nizam, the Telugu dubbed version of I has set the cash registers ringing with Rs. 10.45 crore at the box office.
It is to be noted that the film was released in various parts of North India only on January 15, so the second day box office figures are expected to swell by huge numbers. What will be interesting to see if Hindi version of I manages to make money just like the Telugu version did. The real acid test for I would start only during the weekends. Can Shankar's magnum opus remain steady at box office despite mixed reviews? Lets wait and watch.
