Irrfan Khan's Hindi Medium is setting new benchmarks at the global box office thanks to its phenomenal business in China. Just like in India, the social drama has turned out to be a surprise hit at the Chinese box office. During its release in the last year, the film has grossed Rs 108.14 crore worldwide and now if we add to its China collections (Rs 162 crore), Hindi Medium stands with the grand total of Rs 270.14 crore. Interestingly, the film has surpassed the worldwide collections of Dabangg 2 and Tanu Weds Manu Returns at the box office.
Earlier in a statement, producer Bhushan Kumar said, “There’s a unique twist in this tale. ‘Hindi Medium’ is content-driven and even though Irrfan is an internationally recognised talent, the Chinese distribution body opted for our teaser concept which shows the feet of a man, one representing poverty and the other representing material wealth.” Backed by T-Series and Maddock Films, Hindi Medium released in China on Wednesday. It took in $3.68 million on its opening day, emerging as the second biggest Bollywood opener thereafter Aamir’s Secret Superstar. A quirky social comment on the education system, Hindi Medium is directed by Saket Chaudhary.
After Secret Superstar and Bajrangi Bhaijaan this is the third Bollywood film which has released in China in 2018. Talking about film’s success he further said, “Whether it is the success of ‘Hindi Medium’ in China or ‘Raid’ doing such phenomenal business here, it only reinforces our belief that a good story is what connects with the audience. For us, the key decisions have been to pick stories that have a universal appeal. These are the fruits of those decisions and we are overwhelmed.” Anyway, do you guys think, the film will beat Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan in China?
