Despite facing stiff competition from Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja's Veere Di Wedding, John Abraham's Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran has managed to hold well in the domestic market. The action drama currently stands with the collections of Rs 47.34 crore and with this business, it has surpassed the total of Rani Mukerji's Hichki (Rs 46.17 crore) to become the eighth highest grosser of the year. In few days, it will beat Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor's 102 Not Out (Rs 51.44 crore) to grab the seventh spot in the list.
Since Rajinikanth's Kaala and Hollywood flick Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom are arriving this week, John Abraham's Parmanu will lose a huge chunk of screens at the ticket windows. Though it has already turned out to be a successful venture for its makers. When asked to John that why he chose this subject to make a film, he replied, "I was very influenced by Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, and by the nuclear tests. It defined the trajectory in my life because of incidents that were associated with the sanctions that followed. I was planning to go somewhere, to a college, (but I) didn't get through. There was anger at first, then the understanding came that this (nuclear status) can make India great... I started thinking like an Indian and started feeling like a nationalist."
Parmanu is directed by Abhishek Sharma, who previously helmed films like Tere Bin Laden, Tere Bin Laden 2 and The Shaukeens. The film tells a story about the nuclear tests conducted in 1998 at Pokhran, Rajasthan and also features Diana Penty, Boma Irani and Yogendra Tiku in pivotal roles.
