Director Nag Ashwin's Mahanati is shattering box office records at the box office. The biopic on legendary actress Savitri is doing extraordinarily well at the ticket windows especially in USA. The biographical drama has raked in $ 1.9 million in the American market and is all set to cross the $ 2 million mark today. It has already turned out to be the 11th highest grossing Telugu film there.
Mahanati is based on the life of the legendary actress, Savitri, portrayed by Keerthy Suresh while Dulquer essays the role of popular veteran actor, Gemini Ganesan. Born on January 4, 1936, Savitri had made her acting debut in 1950 Telugu-Tamil drama Samsaram, and went on to star in several classics such as Devadasu, Missamma, Penin Perumai, Pasa Malar, Bhale Ramudu, Thodi Kodallu, Mayabazaar and Gundamma Katha. Mahanati also stars Samantha Akkineni, Vijay Devarakonda Naga Chaitanya, Anushka Shetty, Shalini Pandey, Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Krish, Rajendra Prasad, Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam and Malavika Nair in pivotal roles.
Apparently, Keerthy Suresh had undergone 110 looks to get into the skin of Savitri. Talking about the film and how he showcased the life of Savitri through the cinema, filmmaker Nag Ashwin said, “The film is very honest. Whatever was going on in that period is what we have tried to reflect. When she was younger, there was a certain mood and a certain way she behaved and the way the world was around her. When she became successful, how was it… And when she was in a sort of spiral, how was she and how the world was around her. That way, there’s no purposeful cinematic liberty in Mahanati. We have not forced any unnecessary things because there were enough highs and lows in her real story. We just had to space it out correctly. There was no need to add any heroism to it.”
