It seems Keerthy Suresh and Dulquer Salmaan's has opened the doors of international markets for the south releases. Despite having a pre-weekend release, the film has shattered records of many South biggies in the overseas circuits. In just four days, the biographical period drama earned around Rs 10.10 crore from the markets of Australia, USA, New Zealand and UK. The USA market has contributed heavily with a share of over 90 percent.
Mahanati is based on the life of legendary actress, Savitri, portrayed by Keerthy Suresh while Dulquer essays the role of popular veteran actor, Gemini Ganesan. The film has been directed by Nag Ashwin, who previously helmed Yevade Subramanyam. Born on January 4, 1936, Savitri had made her acting debut in 1950 Telugu-Tamil drama Samsaram, and went on to star in several classics such as Devadasu, Missamma, Penin Perumai, Pasa Malar, Bhale Ramudu, Thodi Kodallu, Mayabazaar and Gundamma Katha. Mahanati also stars Samantha Akkineni, Vijay Devarakonda Naga Chaitanya, Anushka Shetty, Shalini Pandey, Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Krish, Rajendra Prasad, Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam and Malavika Nair in pivotal roles.
Apart from Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan also received immense praise for his portrayal of Gemini Ganesan. Though the actor had earlier said, that he never tried to copy legendary actor's style. He had said, “I’m not going to look like him. I can’t, honestly, and I don’t want to wear prosthetic. My approach is simple. I would like to be me in the 1950s if I was a big movie star. I don’t think I should attempt to play Gemini Ganesan. You don’t really have any off-screen footage of him. You don’t know what kind of person he was off-screen. We only know his persona on screen and I can’t use that to play him off-screen.”
