It seems Akshay Kumar has figured it. Kumar and Independence Day combination has worked time and again. Since the past four times, the actor has been releasing his movies on August 15 and all the time it has worked well for the box office. Kumar's recent flick Mission Mangal which has a starry cast has also hit the theatres on August 15, yesterday. And guess what, the movie has turned out to be one of Kumar's highest opener. Just like his previous Independence Day releases, this one, which celebrates Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) successful launch of Mars Orbiter Mission in 2013 is also set for a bumper opening.
According to the early estimates of the first day, Mission Mangal has made Rs 26 crore (approx). Releasing with 3000 screens across India, Mission Mangal has managed to become Kumar's highest opener, something that our trade analyst predicted in our segment BL Predicts. In the report, our trade analyst also mentioned that the movie is expected to "collect minimum between Rs 23 to Rs 25 crore on its first day at the ticket windows" which turned out to be true.
Until now Kumar's highest opener has been his last Independence Day release, Gold which collected a whopping Rs 25.25 crores on its opening day. In 2017, on Independence Day Kumar-starrer Toilet Ek Prem Katha opened at Rs 13.1 crore
The movie has opened to good reviews as well. In BollywoodLife's review, the movie received three stars out of five. "Mission Mangal's prime strength lies in the crisp narrative and superlative performances. Vidya Balan is absolutely brilliant throughout the film whether she is talking of a power beyond science or when she tells her husband that as a mom she is equally clued in as she is as a scientist. Akshay Kumar delivers the good and has the best one-liners," a part of the review read.
