After showing substantial growth over the weekend, Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte starrer Pad Man witnessed a huge dip on its first Monday at the box office. As per the early estimates, the biographical social drama raked in Rs 5.75 crore and now stands with the grand total of Rs 45.80 crore. The film will cross the Rs 50 crore mark today at the ticket window. Pad Man needs to remain steady during the weekdays to stand with a decent opening week total. Since Aiyaary is coming this week, Akshay's film will face a huge screen crunch at the box office.
The film has received rave reviews from the critics, which will definitely help Pad Man to earn well at the box office. Talking about the film, it is based on the life of Tamil Nadu-based social activist, Arunachalam Muruganantham. Akshay Kumar portrays the central role in the film, who finds a way to make cheap, affordable sanitary napkins for the women in his village. It also features Sonam Kapoor in a pivotal role with a cameo of Amitabh Bachchan. The film is directed by R Balki, who previously helmed films like Ki And Ka, Shamitabh, Paa and Cheeni Kum.
Unlike Akshay Kumar's other films, Pad Man has a very niche appeal due to its unconventional subject and plot. The film is primarily targeted to the multiplex audience in the metro cities. Since the film is made on the expensive budget of around 75 crore, Pad Man needs to earn well not only for makers but also for distributors and exhibitors. Anyway, do you think Pad Man will be sixth consecutive Rs 100 crore film of Akshay Kumar after Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, Jolly LLB 2 and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha?
