As Shahid Kapoor’s onscreen mum in Phata Poster Nikla Hero
After Sridevi, one more top leading lady of her time is all set to return to the Hindi phillum parda: Padmini Kolhapure. While she hasn't been entirely distanced from the arc lights and grease paint, the popular heroine has been busy with acting assignments in regional cinema, keeping her away from Bollywood's madness. Padmini gave an award winning performance in the Marathi film Chimnee Pakhare in 2006, and recently was seen in the Marathi tele-serial Maee. But now the well-known '80s leading lady is headed for a bigger and better role in Hindi cinema, in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Phata Poster Nikla Hero. Padmini will play Sasha’s mommy in the new movie, we hear. So what’s the big deal about the Ma role, as it generally tends to contrived and clichéd in Bollywood? The director Santoshi insists that PPNH isn’t a funny romance like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, as people suspect! The film is intrinsically an intense story about a mother and son, intertwined with light moments punctuating the plot. The last onscreen mother we really liked was Imran Khan’s cool mum played by Ratna Pathak Shah in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa. We say beat that if you want to get noticed in the herd! Gone are the days of weeping Nirupa Roys and conniving Aruna Iranis. It’s time to raise the standards of mommies in B-town. Right, na?
