Panipat box office collection day 1: Arjun Kapoor-Kriti Sanon-Sanjay Dutt starrer takes a poor opening

Panipat would have to double its collections at a bare minimum on Saturday if it has to entertain any thoughts of even breaking even at the box-office

Panipat has not begun on a good note at the box-office. In fact, the period historical drama has opened to very low numbers given its scale, budget, and ancillary costs involved. With merely Rs. 4.12 crore nett on day 1, the film is way below what it needed to collect in order to just entertain thoughts of recovery in the long run, let alone a profit. It's also a further blow for Arjun Kapoor, who appears to have fallen several rungs below his contemporaries in the pecking order. Forget a Dream Girl or Bala starring Ayushmann Khurrana, or a Luka Chuppi or Pati Patni Aur Woh starring Kartik Aaryan, Arjun's latest release has opened way below even that what a Marjaavaan or Commando 3, starring the likes of Sidharth Malhotra and Vidyut Jammwal have registered. It's also a considerable blow for Kriti Sanon after a 200 crore nett grosser like Housefull 4, but given her upcoming lineup, it shouldn't affect her much just as she bounced back with the fourth installment of the Housefull franchise post a dud like Arjun Patiala. On the whole, 2019 as been a decent year for Kriti with two success in Luka Chuppi and Housefull 4 and one lackluster film in Arjun Patiala. Panipat will have to make gargantuan leaps though if the year has to end on a better note for the actress as well as for the iconic Sanjay Dutt, who just can't seem to catch a break in his second coming. After huge setbacks with Bhoomi, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3, Kalank and Prassthanam, the last thing Sanju needs is Panipat joining the mix. Director Ashutosh Gowariker, too, would be hoping for a huge upswing in his baby's fortunes, but while Panipat's reviews may not be as bad as What's Your Raashee or Mohenjo Daro, they aren't that good either for the legendary filmmaker to trust that the film's content will win in the long run. Word-of-mouth would have to come into play big time, but that's easier said than done when the reviews are mixed. Nevertheless, Panipat would have to double its collections at a bare minimum on Saturday if it has to entertain any thoughts of even breaking even at the box-office.
