2017 has been a mixed bag for Bollywood. While several big ticket films like Tubelight and Jab Harry Met Sejal failed to take off at the box office; few movies like Judwaa 2, Golmaal Again, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Hindi Medium have performed exceedingly well. However, it is a South Indian film, Prabhas and Rana Daggubati's Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, that has left everyone behind! Rajamouli's directorial rocked the domestic market, raking in a massive amount of Rs 511 crore from its Hindi version alone. If you compare this to the highest Bollywood grosser of 2017 till now - Golmaal Again (Rs 143 crore), then you will be shocked! Yes, there is an alarming difference of Rs 368 crore between the lifetime box office collections of these two superhit films. But why is this so alarming?
Well, a South Indian film, which was dubbed in Hindi, has been so successful in the Hindi market, but the fact that no Bollywood film could match up to it, is shocking. In fact, if you add the lifetime box office collections of the top 3 Bollywood grossers of 2017 - Golmaal Again (Rs 143), Judwaa 2 (Rs 138 crore) and Raees (Rs 137 crore), still the figure of Rs 418 crore is nowhere near what Baahubali 2: The Conclusion earned alone in its lifetime run (Rs 511 crore)! Lastly, the fact that a South Indian film like Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is the first Indian film to break the Rs 400 crore and Rs 500 crore barrier in the Hindi market is surprising. Also, the fact that it is the only film to enter the Rs 200 crore club in the domestic market this year is a huge achievement in itself!
