The film overtakes last year's record set by Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year...
Salman Khan has broken many records this year, but the latest one would be a feather in his hat. Salman Khan is known to release his film on Eid and Diwali and now he has a unique record of having the highest grossing Eid and Diwali releases with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo becoming HUGE hits!
Salman Khan's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (domestic collection - Rs 207.4 crore and gross worldwide collection - Rs 398 crore) crossed the domestic collections of Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year (Rs 203 crore) a few days back and the worldwide collection of HNY (Rs 383 crore) today, to make it the highest grossing Diwali release so far.
Speaking about this feat, exhibitor and distributor, Akshaye Rathi says, "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is a beautifully made film for the family audience and the audience in Tier II and III cities. If you see the film, it based on the period which starts from Dusshera and ends at Bhai dooj, so it was made for that period. It's clocked up fantastic numbers and I think the film totally deserves to do the business it has done."
Was it better than the earlier Diwali releases? Akshaye reveals, "Personal choices apart, the fact that Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has had the biggest numbers than any other Diwali releases suggests that the audience has liked it and that is what matters."
The film has maintained many shows at the box office still. Salman has crossed the Rs 500 crore mark at the domestic box office and also the Rs 1000 crore at the worldwide box office in one year after the success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
