Varun Dhawan's latest release October opened with a decent response at the box office. Despite having a niche appeal, the romantic drama raked in Rs 20.25 crore in its opening weekend at the ticket windows. With these collections, the film has become the sixth highest opening weekend grosser of the year. It has shattered the first weekend business of movies like Hichki, Aiyaary, Pari, Mukkabaaz, 1921 and Hate Story IV. Though the film didn't perform like any other Varun Dhawan's ventures, looking at the genre and feel, we expect the film to recover its investment through its theatrical run.
Here's the list of highest opening weekend grossers of 2018:
Padmaavat: Rs 114 crore
Baaghi 2: Rs 73.10 crore
Raid: Rs 41.01 crore
Pad Man: Rs 40.05 crore
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety: Rs 26.57 crore
It is important for October, to hold well in the weekdays to stand with the respectable total in its opening week at the box office. Apart from Varun, the film also features debutant Banita Sandhu and Gitanjali Rao in key roles. It is directed by Shoojit Sircar, who previously helmed films like Piku, Madras Cafe and Vicky Donor. The film is written by Juhi Chaturvedi and presented under the banner of Rising Sun Films.
October is a very special film for Varun and he has said this many times during the promotion. During the screening on Friday, the actor said, "October comes from an extremely special place from my heart because as my career forwarded, I just felt that I started becoming more selfish and I wanted to do a selfless character like Dan."
