This week we have two releases - Vidya Balan's Begum Jaan and Dwayne Johnson-Vin Diesel's The Fate Of The Furious. While both the films look interesting and they will clash at the box office, we can't really compare the businesses of these two. Quite simply because both the films are very different from one another and cater to different sets of audience. While one is a niche film, based on true incidents, the other is a big-budget Hollywood movie with a lot of action. One has a limited audience, while the other has mass appeal. But one thing that we can promise is that neither of the films will be low on content. In fact, from the promos, Begum Jaan and The Fate of the Furious look outstanding and they will rock the box office over the weekend. But how much will they rake in over the first weekend?
Talking about the buzz and predicting the box office run for both the films, trade expert, Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor) mentioned, "Begum Jaan looks interesting to me. It is scary that it is coming out against The Fate of the Furious, but having said that, day by day it is looking more and more interesting. The music is catching on, obviously because it is different and it breaks the clutter. And second, if the film carries a good word of mouth publicity, it is really capable of going a long way. Let's face it, The Fate of the Furious is a mass-appealing, hardcore action film for everyone, but Begum Jaan is not. Furious 8 is expected to open like a Tsunami, while Begum Jaan is expected to grow with word of mouth publicity. Both the films are very different in their outlook and the kind of the audience they cater to. So it is not right to compare the two. But here's hoping that the 14th of this month is a Good Friday for the entire fraternity, Bollywood as well as the Hollywood fraternity operating in India." He also reveals that while Furious 8 will get approximately 1700-1800 screens in India, Begum Jaan will get around about 1200 screens across the country. With a decent pre-release buzz and considerable screen space, both the films will rake in the moolah. As Akshaye predicts,"The Fate of the Furious can very conveniently earn Rs 10 crore on day one, while Begum Jaan should make around about Rs 2.50 - 3 crore on the first day. Over the weekend, Begum Jaan will collect Rs 12-14 crore, assuming it gets a good word of mouth publicity. The Fate of the Furious, on the other hand, can make anywhere between Rs 30-35 crore."
