Tiger Shroff's Munna Michael might have been one of the most exciting films of the year, however, it failed to set the box office on fire. In fact, over the first weekend, Munna Michael failed to beat the likes of A Flying Jatt, which was Tiger's biggest box office dud till date. With two back-to-back flops, and with the critics as well as movie-going audience rejecting Munna Michael, we wonder if the film's disappointing run at the box office will have an impact on Tiger's career...
We called up trade expert, Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor), but he made it very clear that Munna Michael's dismal performance will have zero effect on Tiger's career. As Akshaye reasoned, "Yes, Tiger might have had two box office duds (A Flying Jatt and Munna Michael), but before that he had two back-to-back hits (Heropanti and Baaghi). Hits and flops are part and parcel of every actors' career, but what is important is that you take up cinema that entertains. If you look at the subject of Munna Michael, it was interesting, but at the execution level a lot of films go wrong and it is Ok. But you cannot discredit Tiger for choosing the right kind of subjects. He chooses subjects which entertain rather than amuse the critics and I am sure, going ahead too, he will select the right kind of scripts, right kind of filmmakers and do good kind of work and consolidate his position as a star." So what should the star do next? Akshaye added, "Tiger has the massy, single screen audience that comes to watch his movies, but he should simultaneously work towards getting an audience in the multiplexes. And it will surely happen with Student of the Year 2, Baaghi 2 and his other upcoming films." Talking about Munna Michael's debacle, Akshaye revealed, "A couple of things became clear about Munna Michael after it released. One is that, it did not take off at all in the multiplexes and the kind of content that was there, the kind of promos that were given out, it appealed to only the single screen, massy audience and the kids. Without the support of a massive multiplex audience, the film can only go to up to a certain number and not beyond that. That's what seems to have happened. Lack of numbers from the multiplexes was the film's biggest undoing. The numbers that have come is from a minority and under 50 per cent from the multiplexes. So that's the reason why Munna Michael did not take off as it should have."
