With negative reviews and poor box office opening for Anurag Kashyap's film, looks like Ranbir will have to wait till next year for change of fortunes at box office
Bombay Velvet had everything going for it. A star studded cast of Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Karan Johar and Kay Kay Menon. Amit Trivedi's heady mix of jazz tracks. Skillful direction of Anurag Kashyap. Amazing production design and some splendid camera work.
But yet the film has opened to an abysmal start at box office. The critics have mercilessly slammed the film. The audience are feeling let down as the film hasn't lived up to the over hyped expectations. All this sounds very familiar to how Ranbir's other big budget flick Besharam that tanked at the box office, after creating tremendous buzz before its release. Ironically even that was directed by a Kashyap ( Abhinav Kashyap).
Now the important question to ponder upon is - will Bombay Velvet turn out to be a bigger disaster than Besharam? And the box office numbers suggest that Ranbir's Bombay Velvet is on the path of becoming an epic disaster indeed . Not only the film has opened at lesser box office number than films like Piku, Ek Paheli Leela, it has only managed to make Rs 5.2 crore on release day, which is only one-fourth of Besharam's opening day collection.
Taran Adarash tweeted," #Besharam had collected ₹ 21.56 cr on Day 1 [2 Oct - holiday]. #BombayVelvet has collected 1/4th of that film on Day 1 [₹ 5.20 cr]." While Besharam was a big budget vehicle, the amount of money spent on it is nothing compared to the humongous budget of Bombay Velvet. Can Anurag Kashyap's film prove the trade experts wrong and manage to mint some decent money? Or will Bombay Velvet be Ranbir's biggest dud till date? The latter seems more likely.
